Summary: I wish I had read this when I first started Homeschooling!
Comment: This is a great resource for someone who thinks they may be a Charlotte Mason style of learning, or who is just starting out homeschooling! I wish I had read it last year when I was first starting. The book is laid out well so you don't have to sit and read it cover to cover--you can easily skim and peruse it when first starting. Highly recommend it! It brings Charlotte Mason philosophy to today's homeschooler!

Every chapter fills the reader with peace and hope- Charlotte Mason has such a beautiful philosophy and this book is a really nice way to get a condensed version of it.

Comment: We have a daughter and daughter-in-law that are home schooling their children. They found this book to be very helpful with the task of making sure the children get the best education. We as grandparents keep a copy to share in the "Gentle Art of Learning." We would highly recommend this book.

Summary: A missed opportunity
Comment: This book is actually very enjoyable, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants an easy introduction to Charlotte Mason's methods. Charlotte Mason's timeless observations are as relevant today as they were in the 19th century. I only wish that the author's writing style had conveyed that. The book is repetitive, as other reviewers have noted, and it can also be a bit stilted and overly precious. I'm afraid that the writing style, combined with the cloying illustrations might make Charlotte Mason's ideas seem dated as well. Instead of a flowery line drawing on every other page, what if the author had included a sidebar with a modern-life example written in modern English? If the goal is to present Charlotte Mason as a viable alternative to today's school system, then show the reader how to incorporate her methods in today's world. As I said, I did enjoy the book, and it sums up Charlotte Mason's theories well. However, I can't give it more than three stars because of the wordy, repetitive writing style, and the opportunity it missed.

Comment: This is a great intro to Charlotte Mason for newbies but for those who have been introduced to Charlotte's approach before reading this book, it would be a waste of time. It's a repeat of information for me. Well written and easy to read but not much help for myself. I prefer Catherine Levison's basic how to guide to Charlotte Mason.
