Comment: This book is wonderful! I bought a copy for myself, then one for my parents. I plan on purchasing more copies as gifts for family, friends and coworkers. Summary: Using the American Patriot's Almanac in the Classroom
Comment: For this post, we're taking a look at Dr. William Bennett and John Cribb's The American Patriot's Almanac: Daily Readings on America.

This book focuses on daily readings centered around different people and events from American history. Dr. Bennett weaves an exceptional story of America's history from the dramatic story of the Jamestown flood through the American Revolution and Civil War all the way to present day. In addition to the daily readings, you'll also see complete versions of The Declaration of Independence, The United States Constitution, The Gettysburg Address, and several more important historical documents.

For myself, this proved to be a valuable classroom resource for middle school students. I used it to start the class each day with a student reading that day's entry. After the reading, we as a class would discuss what we other information we knew about that day's person or event as well as what information we'd like to research to find out more. Students genuinely looked forward to this part of the class each day. I'd highly recommend every social studies teacher, especially those with American history classes, buy a few of these books for the classroom!

The American Patriot's Almanac: Daily Readings on America by William J. Bennett and John T.E. Cribb was published by Thomas Nelson Publishers last year. If you are looking for a book to help you learn about a variety of events and people from our country's history, this is it! Since this is a book of daily readings, you learn about a different person or event each day, simply by reading one page. Each day also has a short list of other events that occurred on that day in history.

Also included in the book are complete versions of The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution of the United States, The Bill of Rights, The Gettysburg Address, and The Pledge of Allegiance, to name a few.

Reading this book gave me insight on what many people did to help establish our great country. So many gave so much, to live in a free country. It is good to reflect on how our country came to be and to learn more about the people who played vital roles in our nation's history.

The next time you are in a book store or library, pick this book up, it will certainly make you proud to be an American.

Summary: An Education on Patriotism
Comment: The American Patriot's Almanac is a book of daily readings on America. This book is filled with great stories of America's history and her founding. In addition to the daily readings there are informational sections which include flag etiquette, The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United States, just to name a few.

I found this book to be an excellent reminder as to what the people of this country have done in the past and present in order to give us the freedoms that we hold dear. Many of the readings are heart-wrenching and inspire a deeper sense of awe and patriotism. Some of the stories brought a tear to my eye and was a reminder that we can only imagine what it was like to be a signer of the Declaration, or fighting in the Civil War, or fighting for civil rights.

The author seems to have performed extensive research for each of the daily readings, including the timeline snippets at the end of each story. I really enjoyed learning something new everyday. I would highly recommend this book to all who enjoy history, or who just love America.
