Articulation disorder, the most common speech communication problem, is identified in approximately 1 million preschool children each year. Research suggests that problems with articulation, if left unchecked, can lead to reading and spelling difficulties, social challenges, and self-esteem problems. The strongest resource a child with an articulation problem can have is a well-informed parent who knows which articulation behaviors are normal, which are not, and how best to guide his or her child through the process of speech therapy.
This book helps parents decide whether the sound errors their child is experiencing are developmental and within normal limits for their age. The book offers a range of strategies to employ when a child does need some extra help to work through a particular speech difficulty. The book also addresses the emotions parents deal with and devotes a chapter to signs and symptoms of other common communication problems that may co-exist.

Summary: Nothing more than common sense
Comment: We bought this book with high hopes that we could help our son with his phonological issues. But we found that the content did not live up to the title. I was unable to find specific, helpful exercises to actually teach a child to pronounce certain sounds. Some of the activities included are "sing 'Old MacDonald' with your child," or "count the number of letters in this word," "speak clearly to your child" or "read a book to your child." In other words, they are all LISTENING exercises, rather than ACTIVE exercises for a child with phonological problems.
My son has trouble with the sound of the letter "l" - the page of exercises for "l" includes activities like "making lemonade," making "lists" and "lick a lollipop." There is no advice on how to help the child who has trouble with "l" sounds. No activities to teach the child correct articulation.
This is not a handbook, or a workbook, but more a guide for spending time with your child and nothing more. Any good parent would be doing these things already! But I found very little help with actual speech.

Summary: A great gift for new parents
Comment: As a speech-language pathologist, I am often asked for suggestions for activities for encouraging speech and language skills. This book certainly provides that, plus many other important aspects of communication development. My favorite section is "encouraging your child's interest in the printed word." It presents a variety of ideas for parents to expose children to letters and sounds in a natural way, within the environment. A key area mentioned is to not stop reading to a child just because she can read.
This book is a great "new baby" gift. It is not difficult to read and would be valuable to new parents, just in terms of developmental awareness.

Summary: Comprehensive
Comment: Thanks to this book, I realized that my daughter is right on track with her speech development. (We had thought that she was behind.) This book also has some great exercises to do to help them learn to say the sounds right. Since we got this book, my daughter has learned three new sounds...f,r and v. I would recommend this for anyone who is concerned about their child's speech development.
