Product Description:
***Featuring a Foreword by J.K. Rowling***

The Harry Potter Books Were Just the Beginning of the Story. . .

During the brief span of just one decade, hundreds of millions of perfectly ordinary people made history: they became the only ones who would remember what it was like when the Harry Potter saga was still unfinished. What it was like to seek out friends, families, online forums, fan fiction, and podcasts to get a fix between novels. When the death of a character was a hotter bet than the World Series. When the unfolding story of a boy wizard changed the way books are read for all time.

And as webmistress of The Leaky Cauldron, one of the most popular Harry Potter sites on the Internet, Melissa Anelli had a front row seat to it all. Whether it was helping Scholastic stop leaks and track down counterfeiters, hosting live PotterCasts at bookstores across the country, touring with the wizard rock band Harry and the Potters, or traveling to Edinburgh to interview J. K. Rowling personally, Melissa was at the center of the Harry Potter tornado, and nothing about her life would ever be the same.

The Harry Potter books are a triumph of the imagination that did far more than break sales records for all time. They restored the world’s sense of wonder, and took on a magical life of their own. Now the series has ended, but the story is not over. With remembrances from J. K. Rowling’s editors, agents, publicists, fans, and Rowling herself, Melissa Anelli takes us on a personal journey through every aspect of the Harry Potter phenomenon—from his very first spell to his lasting impact on the way we live and dream.

Summary: Harry, A History (and memoir!)
Comment: I went into this book knowing that it was probably more memoir than actual history, but I came away from the book realizing that it was both (in a good way!). Anelli uses her own Harry experience to give her readers a very detailed history of the Harry Potter phenomenon from her view. I really enjoyed reading her side of how Harry Potter became the craze he was, and still is. The only thing I didn't enjoy (and why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5) was the constant changing of the timeline. Sometimes you'd be in 2008 then you would jump back to 1997 when the books first came out, and then all the sudden we'd get back to the original story in 2008. Even so, really good book - it made me miss Harry Potter!! I finished it in 2 days, so that has to say something :-)

Summary: Great book!!!!!
Comment: This was a great read. Coming into the potter fandom world later in the series, I really enjoyed being able to see what happened before I started reading the books. A great read at a great price!:)

Summary: The Book Made of Love
Comment: Harry, A History is the retelling of a fan's journey that started on a train with the birth of a boy wizard in the mind of JK Rowling. Melissa's book is filled with historical facts and anecdotes that take the reader through the epic tale of the months prior to the release of Deathly Hallows and the fandom's reaction. But unlike many other non-fiction recounts, this book offers so much more.

The book opens with a foreword by JK Rowling herself. Jo allows the reader an inside look at her thoughts on the fan response to Harry Potter. As a huge fan of her writing, I admit I wondered how she felt about the enormous fan following. That inside glance into the mind of this brilliant author is a huge plus to the start of the retelling of the fans' journey.

The news of the last book release starts the first chapter; and the book concludes with a post Deathly Hallows epilogue that leads us to the home of Jo Rowling. Melissa fills Harry, A History full of dates, times and events that chronicle this exciting time period in the Harry Potter fandom. Yet the book doesn't stop there. She's also able to portray the excitement and emotion of the fans, the stress of a community trying to prepare for the climactic moment of this journey and help the rest of the world understand why this series outshines others in the hearts of so many readers. In Harry a History, Melissa is able to capture the intense love fans have for this series and for each other.

There are other extras that make this book very appealing. First, the pages of pictures are an incredible bonus. Pictures of Jo, Fiddy, PotterCasts, fans, conferences and actors just help to enhance the overall feeling. Once you've read this book you don't just understand how and why this fandom has grown to be such a large groups of close knit friends, but you can feel the emotions yourself. Readers are also treated to insights into the mind of Jo Rowling in Melissa's exclusive interview. Melissa still continues to add extras into her Harry, A History website.

Harry Potter fans are a passionate group of people who love literature and have enjoyed this growing community we call fandom. Melissa Anelli's book, Harry, A History, captures the events, excitement and the love that fills the fandom years after the release of the last Harry Potter book.

Harry saved the world with his love. Melissa's retelling of the fan's journey allows the reader to understand how and why that love has spread from the pages of a book into the world of fans.

Summary: Best Harry Potter "Fandom" Book
Comment: This book describes very perfectly what it was like to be a Harry Potter fan during the months prior to the release of the 7th book. I recommend it to any & every Harry Potter fan & it is also a great read for anyone who would like to understand why their "Harry Potter nerd" friend acts they way they do towards the series. Melissa was in the center of all the fandom related events, from interviewing J.K. Rowling herself to running The Leaky Cauldron website to being one of the hosts on the HP podcast "PotterCast," no one could have possibly written a better book about what it is/has been like to be a Harry Potter fan during that time.

Summary: Read with a grain of salt
Comment: Parts of this book are wonderful--namely, the parts that are about Harry and the publication history of the series and the cultural history surrounding it (e.g., New York Times bestseller list changes).

But those parts are surrounded by the author's experience, which comes off as snobby, self-important, and exclusive. I rolled my eyes dozens of times at the name-dropping, the "OMG-how-can-little-old-me-now-be-interviewing-Jo-and-getting-calls-from-MSNBC" sentiment, the feeling I get that Anelli thinks far too highly of herself.

In addition, Anelli rarely grounds the reader in time or place. The first chapter withheld pertinent information purposely because, I'm sure, the author believed doing so created suspense, whereas really it was just infuriating. Often, I had no idea which Harry book she was talking about or even which country she was talking about when discussing the publication.

Anelli is able to give a unique perspective of the Harry Potter phenomenon; I just wish she could have done so more gracefully.
