John Granger, a Christian, a teacher of classic literature, and a father of seven children, explores the surprising reasons J. K. Rowling's books are so popular and examines what the author believes are strong Christian themes throughout the Harry Potter books. Granger helps readers understand the classic literary devices used in the Potter books and contends that Rowling is writing in the tradition of Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. Are they just a good read, or do they nourish the soul as well?

Summary: Looking for God in Harry Potter
Comment: This is a great book! For those who are concerned about their children becoming involved in the occult by reading the Harry Potter series, this should put all fears to rest. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Harry Potter.

Summary: Overall, a well-written defense
Comment: I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of information in this book. As a Christian, the idea that the Harry Potter books have Christian influence was not new to me; the books' views on love and death are as obviously Christian as it gets. And whatever whatshisname in Time Magazine wants to say, Dumbledore is clearly the incarnation of God the Father. But Granger goes much further such basic notions, delving into the mythology, making comparisons with C.S. Lewis and Tolkien, and explaining the ancient philosophies while he's at it. He also provides an excellent distinction between magic that deals with the occult and magic that is a symbol(emphasis on symbol, because this type of magic is not real) of the higher meaning in our life, and is thus compatible with Christianity. Although I have never felt inclined to defend my tastes in literature, this will certainly be helpful in the event that I ever decide to do so.
That being said, I do have a few minor complaints. There are certain notions in this book that are a bit of a stretch, and I think at times Granger is too eager to draw Christian parallels with the books. Certainly, the books are strongly influenced by the Christian religion, but not every sentance of the book is a Christian metaphor. I also disagree with the black-and-white manner in which he potrays the Slytherin and Gryffindor conflict. Although the conflict is nearly black-and-white, the qualifications for the Slytherin house are cunning and ambition, neither of which is evil in and of itself. In fact, as Granger neglects to mention, the symbol of Slytherin, the snake, is viewed in Western culture alternatively as healer and deciever, both Eve's downfall and the symbol of medicine. In keeping with such a tradition, the head of the Slytherin house, Snape, is both an agent of destruction and a healer/savior, depending on the day. Granger neglects this aspect in favor of a black-and-white battle between good and evil, which is almost true, so it is not a major fault, but it is not entirely true.
Otherwise, the book is excellent, and for those Christians who feel obliged to defend their bookshelf, it is a necessity.

Summary: Excellent for the Christian HP defender!
Comment: This book, like all John Granger's work, is thorough and enlightening. It is the first book to which one can turn in order to understand that not only is Harry Potter NOT occultic, but it is actually edifying. This book, along with one by Connie Neal, was the one I picked up after discovering a love for HP in order to reassure myself that what I saw in HP was not just in MY imagination, that there really was more to HP than most Christians were prepared to perceive. I was not disappointed and I gained a greater understanding of the symbolism of the story and stories in general. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for answers to the HP "dilemma". While the Connie Neal book is very good, I recommend this one over it. It's a great one to pass along to well-meaning friends or family members that are concerned about what you or your children are reading.
