Summary: Create an Avid Reader
Comment: I must admit that I am becoming a fan of Jessie Wise and her daughter Susan Wise Bauer.
When my oldest was to begin Kindergarten we kept her home as we did not want to send a five year old to all day school. I wanted a phonics based reading program that didn't cost an arm-and-a-leg and found "The Ordinary Parents Guide". I was amazed at the progress and how the English language was made logical (can that be possible?). I believe we averaged 20 min./day and four days a week with holidays and the summer off. We completed the course before she started first grade. She tested at a 3rd grade level. One year later and my second daughter began the program before she was five years old. She will be starting first grade in 5 months and we can't get her away from books. She is currently reading the Narnia series. I can't wait to start our youngest.
This book is amazing and I have recommended it to family and friends. As long as you stick with the program and do 20-30 min/day your child will be reading in no time. I want to make one point clear though, your child will become frustrated not with the "Ordinary Parents Guide" but with the local library and book store. There are not many phonics based first reader out there. Most first readers have long vowel words and "sight" words that are covered later in the book but not until about half way through the curriculum. Just be aware that you will have to help your child when reading the "Dick and Janes" and other childrens books. Also, don't let other well meaning people tell you a 4 or 5 year old can not do this as it is too advanced and fast paced: you'll prove them wrong in a year or two.

Summary: A Good, Simple Guide
Comment: We purchased this book to use with our five year old son after reading the beginning of The Well-Trained Mind and deciding to try that approach. I have been pleased with it. We have only completed eight lessons, but it has been simple to use and only takes about 10-15 minutes to do a lesson! One suggestion that my son came up with that we have found to be very helpful is to do the vowel and consonant poems to the tune of the alphabet song. Singing it makes it much more fun than reciting for us. At this point, I think I will use this book to help teach reading to all my children.

Summary: Great Phonics Program
Comment: This is a really good program. Both of my children are doing it together and loving it. I have a 9 year old son and a 5 year old daughter. Having my son work along with the my daughter is actually helping her, she was struggling at the begginning and he could recite the ryhme's from his bedroom where he was playing. My son has been struggling in reading for awhile so instead of starting him in the middle and my daughter at the begginning I just started them both at the begginning. That way I can make sure that nobody misses anything. I would recommend "The Ordinary Parents Guide to Reading" to anyone with a child that is struggling with reading or anyone who has a child that is just ready to learn to read. The first 25 or so lessons are strickly learning the sounds of the letters then it starts teaching the children how to blend the letters to read real words. Each lesson only takes about 20 minutes. Our family loves it!

Summary: I have found something better.
Comment: This book is not comprehensive and does not teach writing or spelling. It also doesn't cover sylables until the end of the book and it groups words together according to their endings and similar vowel sounds which is confusing for beginning readers and gives them a backwards focus that is not reliable with all words that have the same ending or vowel spelling. I would recommend that instead of getting this book, to use "Spell to Write and Read" by Wanda Sanseri. This is a full curriculum that you can use from pre-school/kindergarden through highschool. The total cost for the program is about $200 so it is very pricey initially, but it is the best way to teach reading. I wish I had known about it five years ago! Summary: Happy Homeschooling Mom
Comment: After recently reading The Well-Trained Mind, I immediately checked this book out from the library which was suggested for teaching your child to read. Once reviewing the book I ordered it from Amazon. I am homeschooling my 5 year old son. I am a certified teacher, but at times feel inadequate about teaching my own child. This book provides a strong, systematic phonics approach to teaching reading. A must have for anyone wanting to teach their child to read.
