The fastest-selling book in publication history, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS was a critical success and is loved by fans around the world. In THE DEATHLY HALLOWS LECTURES, John Granger reveals the Potter finale's brilliant details, themes and meanings. Even the most ardent of Harry Potter fans will be surprised by and delighted with the Hogwarts Professor's explanations of the three dimensions of meaning in DEATHLY HALLOWS to include why Ms. Rowling chose to make Lily's eyes green, why Harry buried Moody's eye where and when he did, and why Ollivander prefers the three wand cores he does. Ms. Rowling has said that alchemy sets the "parameters of magic" in the series; after reading the chapter-length explanation of DEATHLY HALLOWS as the final stage of the alchemical Great Work in THE DEATHLY HALLOWS LECTURES, the serious reader will understand how important literary alchemy is in understanding Rowling's artistry and accomplishment. The other seven chapters explore, among other things, the five writing tricks Ms. Rowling uses to work her story magic, the deciphering of the "Triangular Eye" symbol for the three Hallows, Harry's "struggle to believe" in Albus Dumbledore, why Ms. Rowling revealed that she "always thought" of the Headmaster as gay, and the more than 25 echoes of her first book, PHILOSOPHER'S STONE, in DEATHLY HALLOWS. Did you wonder why Fred died in the end? Why Harry went underground seven times in Deathly Hallows? Granger explains how Ms. Rowling's story formula required these twists - - - as well as two trips to King's Cross and two meetings with Albus Dumbledore at story's end. John Granger, the Hogwarts Professor, has spoken about the meaning and magic of Harry Potter at major universities from coast to coast and as a Keynote Speaker at fan conventions in the United States and Canada. Enjoy these lectures to learn the ins and outs and fascinating depths of DEATHLY HALLOWS - - - information unavailable anywhere else!

Summary: Lectures, indeed.
Comment: I bought this book along with "Does Harry Potter Tickle Sleeping Dragons?" by Nancy Solon Villaluz. I preferred the Villaluz book, which I feel has much better writing style and overall content, than "The Deathly Hallows Lectures."
As a long-time reader of Mr. Granger's, I know that he has always had some interesting ideas (along with his history of wildly wrong guesses), but it would just be nice if he didn't ramble on like Rowling's character, Professor Binns.

Summary: Too Many Errors
Comment: On first glance this book is intelligently written and very interesting. However, once you start actually reading the essays that changes. It's not that Granger's theories are lacking or not well thought out. It's that he makes enough errors in the first essay that I'm not sure I'm going to read beyond it. To name just two he uses "astrology" when he means "astronomy" and, when using the Star Wars movies as an example, he calls Han Solo, Hans Solo. Such mistakes call into question the accuracy of his other examples. Also, he should have run his manuscript through a basic spell checker. It really takes away from a book, especially one that's supposed to be intelligent analysis, to run into a lot of misspelled words. I realize that the pressures of publishing make it impossible to keep out all such errors, but this is ridiculous. If such things don't bother you, then give this a read. If they do, stay away.

Summary: Another great book by John Granger
Comment: I confess myself somewhat disappointed in the 7th HP book, as it deviated so much from the format of the first six. I'd love to see a sort of "sequel" that details what the friends of Harry experienced during the school year AT Hogwarts itself... however, once again Professor Granger has succeeded in renewing my love of this series and my desire to read it yet again. His remarkable insights and critiques of the book are not only revealing but just plain fun to read in themselves!

Summary: food for thought
Comment: I got this book hoping for a quick and dirty enumeration of the Deathly Hallows secrets I had missed, as well as hidden connections to the other books. However, this turned out to be a completely different kind of book than I expected. Rather than delving into the stories themselves, this is really a literary analysis of the last Harry Potter book, and to a certain extent all of them, drawing connections and parallels to other famous authors and their techniques.
On one hand, I cannot say I was not at least a bit disappointed that my desires for hidden facts were not satisfied. On the other, I did not regret reading this book, as I think it gave me much to think about with respect to JK Rowling's talent and expertise. I can safely say I now better understand the Harry Potter appeal and worldwide success. One notable gripe I had with this book was that sometimes the explanations seemed to drag a lot. I believe the same material could have been presented in maybe half or 2/3 of the space. Having said that, I would recommend this book to any serious Harry Potter fan.

Summary: Another great book by John Granger!
Comment: I highly recommend The Deathly Hallows Lectures. John Granger has previously discussed symbolism and layers of meaning in the first six books of the Harry Potter series. This explores meaning in The Deathly Hallows. Besides discussing the keys to understanding the series, Granger expands on literary influences on J. K. Rowling. There are footnotes linking to further reading in websites, and a chapter on frequently asked questions. John Granger enables the reader to return to the series with an increased appreciation of J. K. Rowling's artistry. The Deathly Hallows Lectures are enlightening and a pleasure to read.
