Simon is having a bad day; a bad hair day. First his sister gives him a strange hair cut, then his friends tease him. Simon doesn't know what to do. Lucky for him he runs into Grandma Rose. After listening to his sorrowful story she helps him learn an important life lesson; how to handle teases and put-downs. By comparing teases to fishing hooks she tells him a tale of how fish learned not to bite. With fanciful characters such as Harmony Hippy Fish, Freddie Fang, Max the Mouse Fish and more, Simon learns that he, too, can swim free from the teasing hooks that people toss his way.

Summary: Best advice
Comment: This book has the best advice for how to deal with teasing! Actual practical application! The fishing analogy with "hook" and "bite" is easy to remember and reinforce. Everyone in the class (4th) is now trying to be a "free fish" and reminding others not to "bite". We are practicing our responses/actions to the "hooks" that are usually cast to us.
I wish this book had been around when I was a kid, cos no one ever gave this kind of help to me--in school or at home. If you feel helpless about teaching your child to deal with this issue, this is the book for you!

Summary: Valuable Teaching Resource
Comment: Karen made a lasting impression on our school when she came and spent the day. Her assemblies are engaging, energetic, and a lot of fun for the whole school. And it's all based largely on this book. This one wonderful book. It's the perfect hands-on manual for younger children about how to deal with teasing and put-downs. For months after her visit to our school, I referred back to the book and back to Karen's assembly. And it worked very effectively. If your child is having some difficulties in school with teasing or put-downs, then you absolutely need to read this book with them and have some long discussions afterwards. The book goes far beyond the typical, "It-does-not-matter-what-other-people-think-of-you-approach" that is always very ineffective because, let's face it, when you're a kid in school, it does matter. And life can be pretty tough when you become a target for ridicule. Karen has concrete advice and strategies your child can use the very next day. Well written, too.

Summary: For all grade levels
Comment: Simon's Hook is a fantastic tool to help teach us skills for dealing with verbal bullying. These are life long skills every person would benefit from having. We use it in an anti-bullying campaign designed for K-8. There are other books as well but this is the key to setting up the language the entire staff and student body will use and understand. It is used not only in our local public school system but in a number of private schools nearby. I was first introduced to the book through a special education program for children with social skills deficits such as Aspergers and higher functioning levels of autism who tend to be more gullible and clearly more tempting as targets. For these kids just knowing one or two ways to deflect the taunts and teasing has made a huge difference. Imagine the benefits gained by children (and adults) who have "normal" social skills awareness. While this is an excellent book in my opinion of giving a set of concrete skills to handle being bullied it falls short in the department of teaching how to not be a bully in the first place. It can be used for that purpose by asking when has the person been the one setting out the bait and how do they like being the one who gets hooked, etc.

Comment: As a Clinical Social Worker, working with children in the school setting, I have used this book a number of times with children who are bullied or who are "buying" negative peer comments. This book is excellent in providing a fun way to have a discussion about those negative comments.
