Summary: Great guidance for the parent of a two year old
Comment: We are a few weeks away from my daughter's second birthday and I wanted some guidance about discipline. This book was more than I expected. It provided some great insight into the mind of the two year old - why they do the things they do. It helped put me in a better frame of mind (essentially stop being so frustrated over the behavior and accept that I know it's going to happen) and gave me the framework of my role as the parent. This book was also a good wake-up call for us to turn off the television. Deep down we knew it wasn't great, even though she wasn't watching a ton, she was watching too much.

The reviews that note that Rosemond advocates spanking have blown his comments way out of proportion. He basically says a swat on the bottom to get the child's attention is ok but notes that spanking is usually ineffective in this age group. I don't plan to spank but I don't think it's wise to throw the baby out with the bathwater so to speak because most of the information in this book is thought provoking and I think worthwhile.

Be forewarned, he does take a politically incorrect stand by saying that children in their first three years are better off at home with a parent than in daycare. Again, I don't think it's necessary to throw out all of his advice if you disagree with this position, I stay at home but know that it's not a feasible or desirable solution for everyone.

Summary: not my cup of tea
Comment: I thought Rosemond's thoughts on play were valuable. I did go through my two-year old's toy box and got rid of all the toys that don't require any imagination, and his ability to stay with one activity increased dramatically.

However, I wouldn't recommend this book because I feel that his advice is archaic and unsubstantiated. He recommends making your child feel like he or she is no longer the center of your life, that you are the center of theirs. I see his point, but I have a hard time with that. What's wrong with a child feeling so important to a parent? Also, I'm just not comfortable with letting him roam the house unsupervised for extended periods of time. I feel that at his young age, he needs adult interaction. not all the time, but most of the time.

I guess I have more of an attachment style, and Rosemond's recommendations for the most part just didn't sit well with me.

Comment: My boss recommended this book to me, and I think it is a must read for any parent of a 2-year old. I would recommend reading it when your child turns one and re-reading it at 2.
