Foreword by Michael Shermer, Ph.D.
Contributors include Richard Dawkins, Penn Jillette, Julia Sweeney, and Dr. Donald B. Ardell
It’s hard enough to live a secular life in a religious world. And bringing up children without religious influence can be even more daunting. Despite the difficulties, a large and growing number of parents are choosing to raise their kids without religion.
In Parenting Beyond Belief, Dale McGowan celebrates the freedom that comes with raising kids without formal indoctrination and advises parents on the most effective way to raise freethinking children. With advice from educators, doctors, psychologists, and philosophers as well as wisdom from everyday parents, the book offers tips and insights on a variety of topics, from "mixed marriages" to coping with death and loss, and from morality and ethics to dealing with holidays. Sensitive and timely, Parenting Beyond Belief features reflections from such freethinkers as Mark Twain, Richard Dawkins, Bertrand Russell, and wellness guru Dr. Don Ardell that will empower every parent to raise both caring and independent children without constraints.

Summary: Excellent!
Comment: I purchased this book thinking I was wasting my money. I have found most parenting books a waste of money. This one fooled me. My favorite part of this book is the letter the author wrote to his child. The book is never derogatory or hateful of belief. It is intellectual, but not pretencious. I found it helped me discuss my beliefs with my 11 year old.

Summary: Good book but can do without dry philosophical babble
Comment: For the most part this was a great book and a really good read. the middle of the book however becomes a bit difficult and uninteresting to read. It could have done without several chapters that go on and on about philosophical reasons to believe in God. I'm sure if you are looking to buy a book about raising your kids "beyond belief", you've already made up your mind about Christianity/God/etc. Plus as a skeptic, I found it very difficult to read things that weren't scientifically/rationally based.
Other than that, however, the book had many good points including how to handle death, holidays, family, etc. Overall good book!

Summary: An ethical approach to parenting
Comment: Despite such a large portion of our population not being religious, it is a shame not enough of these books have been published for the secular community. This book has proved to be touch a wide variety of ethical concerns and I recommend this product for anyone who is looking for an approach to parenting that does not include the dogmatic approaches of religion.

Summary: MY Version of What a 'Bible' Should Be!!!
Comment: This book is one of the most well written books about secular parenting and dealing with all kinds of different situations. I have read it cover to cover several times and still turn to it when I encounter a difficult situtation with my now 6 year old son (death, holidays, life...). This IS my bible. It is full of many different topics and stories with regards to parenting a free-thinking child. I recommend this book to any parent who wants to not only have a better understanding of what it means to have a secular family but also how to go about doing it. The personal situations provided by the authors gave me much hope and confidence in carrying out my own free-thinking ways as well. Very, very good book!
