Summary: A must have for curriculum planning
Comment: I am just starting homeschooling with my oldest. I discovered that my own top pick for an umbrella curriculum was going to be way out of our budget, so I started researching different curriculums. I asked for advice on e-mail lists and looked through online reviews, but everyone just said that this worked for us or it didn't. I was so overwhelmed with the volume of information, much of which just wasn't helplful.
This book made it so easy to figure out what curriculum would be best for my child, based on numerous variables. There is plenty of information about learning and teaching styles, preparation time, ease of use, coordination with other curriculums (e.g., phonics and spelling), religious affiliation, and other very important information (like that a particular kindergarten math curriculum is more advanced than average, so that I knew to get the K instead of the grade 1 books). Most of the common information is laid out in a grid, making comparisons very easy, while the particulars of each are described in paragraph form.
I found that even though the book is 4 years old now, all of the curricula that I was interested in were still available, although some now had new editions with different names or publishers. But it was not difficult to find and order everything online.

Summary: This is a must have resource for new homeschoolers.
Comment: This book is a godsend for parents considering homeschooling, or parents who have decided to homeschool but don't where to begin. Besides just providing helpful information and advice, this book actually gives you a practical framework by which you can start to develop your homeschool from the bottom up. It helps you see what your teaching style as a homeschool parent is, what your child's learning style is, and helps you connect the dots between who you and your kids are as a family and which of some of the best resources available on the market for homeschoolers will fit that identity. I was really unsure of what I was doing before reading and using this book, but now the whole concept of homeschooling and how I am going to start is much more clear and exciting to me.
As a new homeschooler, I'm about to attend my first homeschool conference and probably purchase my first year's worth of homeschool curriculum. Thanks to this great book, I was able to develop several plans for homeschooling my kids. When I get to the conference I can hone in on some of the materials I'm interested in buying. I've heard that your first homeschool conference can be an overwhelming and terrifying experience if you don't have some idea beforehand of what you want to check out. This book has made me feel much more confident going in.

I have used both of them many times over the last three years. Good for all ages. Congratulations if you are new to homeschool; it is a great experience.
