Summary: Didn't work for my son
Comment: My son is going through kindergarden again. The main reason, he can't read. I thought this book would help. He was easily bored with it. After the first two days with it, he wants nothing to do with it. It is sooo slow to begin. I thought if I skipped through some of the begininng it would not be so boring to him. I was wrong. We are now going to try BOB books. (Which he wanted to try in the first place.)

Summary: Former third grade teacher, current homeschooling mom
Comment: I am thrilled with the outcome of this reading program. One of the main points I would like to make is the positive reinforcement that the book encourages. Using the pictures as a reward and also as a tool for testing comprehension is such a valuable tool. I really love the way my son was able to comprehend and sound out words instead of relying on picture clues, he was able to use context clues for meaning. One word of caution, some stories also add a chance to make moral lesson such as the teasing or stealing content in a few stories...we went to lesson 79 and then stopped the program and moved into short chapter books. My son is ready to enter 1st grade and is testing on a teachable 3rd grade, independent 2nd grade level. Very satisfied. In addition to this program we wrote in a journal that had space for a picture and lines for the story. Writing daily in his journal. In the beginning he wrote or dictated and I would rewrite with correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. By the middle of the year he was writing independently full sentence and at the end of the year he was able to write a paragraph.

Summary: The Best Book I Ever Bought
Comment: I was investigating various gifted private schools on behalf of my son who was going to be a first grader. During one tour, I started crying because the preschool class was learning the exact same thing being taught in my son's rural kindergarten class. At a few schools, I was told that my son would have to repeat kindergarten because he couldn't read and everyone entering first grade knew how to read. I encountered a master teacher at one school who told me to get this book. After a month or two, she retested my son and he was assigned to the slower 1st grade group. After a few more months, he exchanged places with a profoundly gifted child in the fast group. I am indebted to this teacher who set my son on the right path.

Lest anyone doubt that this product doesn't impact learning in the long-run, my son's 6th grade overall ACT score matched the average ACT score earned by seniors in our state. His 9th grade PSAT scores indicate that he may become a merit scholar in 11th grade. His I.Q. is five points below mine and yet his 9th grade PSAT reading score is already 6 points above my 11th grade PSAT reading score.

In our case, urgency rather than student interest led us to purchase this book. Because of this, I simply set up an external reward system (M&Ms) to motivate my son.

Three years later, I once again pulled out this book to teach my daughter to read as she was entering kindergarten at another gifted school. This was extremely fortunate because the vast majority of children entering this class knew how to read at a fairly high level.

Summary: FABULOUS
Comment: On lesson 38 with my 4.5 year old daughter. Slow start with the lessons; in fact we had a false start and came back to it a bit later after I had done a better job educating myself on the program. (It's not one you just crack open and start, child at your side.) I had never heard of this or direct instruction before this. My child is in preschool, but homeschooling mamas recommended this book. The difference between reading levels of my little girl vs other (also very bright) kids in her preschool class is amazing.

Every child should have the opportunity to have such early success with reading. I am stunned to think that the people in our nation who are functionally illiterate could have learned to read as four year olds--maybe five year olds--with this program. Astounding.

Summary: An Outstanding Book
Comment: When my son was starting kindergarten he was having problems with the reading. But at the end of the kindergarten he was improving so much that his teacher was very surprised. The teacher also ordered this book for her children.

I love this book. It's a must have in your collection. I have recommend this book to a great deal of my friends.
