Summary: Anne Shirley is Unforgettable!
Comment: I have read the entire Anne of Green Gables series (some books more than once), and they are my favorite classics!! In fact, my Anne books are so well-read that they have been glued and taped and re-glued and re-taped... you get the point! Really, though, this series has held up very well, and I highly recommend this Collectors Edition. In the back of each book is a biography on the author Lucy Maud Montgomery and a map of Prince Edward Island.
I was first introduced to Anne when I borrowed the first book from the library, and "It opened on a world of wonder". It was like no other book that I had ever read -- it was superbly wonderful! Maud's genius and her excellent writing ability make these books come alive. The characters throughout this entire series are very memorable and are some of the best cast of characters that I have ever seen in a book. The scenery is vividly depicted, making the reader feel like she/he is there. There are some books that are very boring and the story is slow, but not these! There is enjoyable reading on every page of these fantastic books!
There are eight books in the Anne of Green Gables series:
1. Anne of Green Gables
2. Anne of Avonlea
3. Anne of the Island
4. Anne of Windy Poplars
5. Anne's House of Dreams
6. Anne of Ingleside
7. Rainbow Valley
8. Rilla of Ingleside
Anne of Green Gables is the first in this series, as you can see, and probably the best in my opinion. In it, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert of Green Gables decide to adopt a boy around 11 or 12 years old to help around the farm since Matthew is getting up in years. Well, when Matthew arrives at Bright River station to pick up the boy, he learns that a queer mistake occurred -- instead of a boy, there is a girl. This girl is Anne Shirley, the timeless heroine -- beloved and endearing Anne Shirley (spelled with an E). She is an orphan, with red hair and freckles, and "hasn't a pick on her bones". But, she has a huge imagination, a heart of love, and she dreams of the day when she can call herself Anne of Green Gables.
Anne of Avonlea is about Anne Shirley teaching Avonlea school. Marilla adopts twins,
Davy and Dora Keith, and they have some tough moments with Davy. Anne, who is always getting into scrapes, has her share of them -- dying her nose red, selling someone else's cow when she thought it was hers, and falling through the roof into the Cobb's duck house. In the end, Marilla tells Anne that she can go to college with Anne's former rival but now sincere friend, Gilbert Blythe.
Anne of the Island is one of my favorites! Anne is at Redmond college in Kingsport, and she and her friends, Priscilla Grant, Stella Maynard, and Philippa Gordon, move into Patty's Place with Aunt Jamesina to keep house. Anne doesn't realize that handsome Gilbert Blythe is trying to win her heart. Will Gilbert win her over the dashing Royal Gardner, who Anne thinks is her true Prince Charming?
Anne of Windy Poplars is told through letters from Anne to her beloved fiancé, Gilbert. Anne is a vice president at Summerside High School, and she boards with two widows, Aunt Kate and Aunt Chatty, their house keeper Rebecca Dew, and their cat Dusty Miller. Anne's way wasn't always strewn with roses, but in the end, she wins out!
Anne's House of Dreams -- Anne is getting married!! After her marriage to Gilbert, they both make their home in Four Winds. There they make good friends -- Captain Jim, Miss Cornelia, and Leslie Moore. This is also where they start their family.
Note: There is about a six year lapse between Anne's House of Dreams and the next book.
Anne of Ingleside -- Anne and Gilbert make their new home in Glen St. Mary. Here, they name their beautiful new home "Ingleside". Susan Baker is full-time maid and cook for them, and, boy does she add spice to the story! Anne has six children: Jem, Walter, Nan (Anne), Di (Diana -- Nan and Di are twins), Shirley, and Rilla (Bertha Marilla). Anne has her hands full, especially when Aunt Mary Maria comes to stay. Then Anne worries that Gilbert doesn't love her anymore...
Rainbow Valley -- We have come to the book when Anne doesn't appear in the title.
This book is mostly about Anne's children and the Meredith clan (Jerry, Faith, Una, and Carl), and a certain girl named Mary Vance. Together they have many wonderful adventures!
Rilla of Ingleside is about Anne's youngest daughter, Rilla, enduring the horrors of World War II, which comes as a blow for the entire family. As her brothers and childhood playmates head off to fight, Rilla knows that she and the women at home must "keep faith".
Please take the time to read this series, and I guarantee you that you'll love them!! Let yourself be immersed in this classic story! Maud did a wonderful job with them, and they couldn't be better!! I hope that my review has been helpful to you.

Summary: Great detail about old times, plus Anne Shirley is a great character
Comment: I like these books for 2 reasons:
1. The stories of Anne Shirley feel like the stories and details people may have heard from their grand mothers about their every day life. Examples: putting a hot water bottle in blankets to keep the bed warm - well, of course they didn't have central heating back then and it was still as cold then as now! Another example is about the elaborate tea times and the etiquette around tea times. Another example is about girls making a deliberate choice of either getting married or staying as old maids and the expectations around these choices. There are many many such examples. I especially love the detail about clothes and fashion of the time.
The only negative about this is that several times it is so detailed that the story moves a lot slower than it could.
2. Anne Shirley is characterized as a very strong and very feminine. I enjoyed the detail about the different situations she gets into and the thought process she goes through.

Summary: Anne is a Great Character
Comment: When Marilla and Matthew, sister and brother, want to adopt a boy to help with the farm, they're in for a surprise when Mrs. Lynde comes home with an adventurous, red haired, hot headed girl. Anne is so excited to have a place to call her home. She loves Green Gables, the house in which Matthew and Marilla live. She hates when people laugh at her use of more mature words, and loses her temper easily. Anne is hilarious, and makes tons of mistakes. But she "never makes the same mistake twice," as she likes to say. Anne even makes it clear to everyone that she likes her name to be written with an E at the end. But when she realizes Matthew and Marilla might send her back to the Asylum, Anne does everything in her power to convince them to let her stay. She wants more than anything to be able to call herself Anne of Green Gables. I love this book because you're never bored when you're reading it, and it will always give you a good laugh. I would definitely recommend this book.
