Scarlett Martin has grown up in a most unusual way. Her family owns the Hopewell, a small hotel in the heart of New York City. Her nineteen-year-old brother, Spencer, is an out of work actor facing a family deadline to get his career in order. Eighteen-year-old Lola has the delicate looks of a model, the practical nature of a nurse, and a wealthy society boyfriend. Eleven-year-old Marlene is the family terror with a tragic past.

When the Martins turn fifteen, they are each expected to take over the care of a suite in the once elegant, now shabby Art Deco hotel. For Scarlett’s fifteenth birthday, she gets both a room called the Empire Suite, and a permanent guest named Mrs. Amberson. Scarlett doesn’t quite know what to make of this C-list starlet, world traveler, and aspiring autobiographer who wants to take over her life. And when she meets Eric, an astonishingly gorgeous actor who has just moved to the city, her summer takes a second unexpected turn.

With Mrs. Amberson calling the shots, Spencer’s career to save, Lola’s love life to navigate around, and Marlene’s prying eyes everywhere, things won’t be easy. Before the summer is over, Scarlett will have to survive a whirlwind of thievery, Broadway glamour, romantic missteps, and theatrical deception.

The show, as they say, must always go on . . . .

Scarlett,

Are you still asleep? I can hear you in there, snoring away. I need the following:

White plum tea (whole leaf, loose, organic)
Yerba maté lotion
Dance tights
Laptop computer (I’ll leave it to you to pick one out)
A book on how to write a book
A spicy tuna roll (brown rice)
A list of all plays currently on Broadway
Matches

$4000 should be enough. I’ve shoved the money under your door (see it?). I need these things by noon. I’m meditating now. I want my change, but feel free to take cabs if the purchases are too heavy.

Get the sushi last, obviously. And wake up! We have work to do!

- Mrs. A

Summary: When Do I Move?
Comment: Scarlett Martin lives what some might call a charmed life: she lives in the Hopewell Hotel, which her parents own and run. On the morning of her fifteenth birthday Scarlett (finally) receives her very own cell phone and a suite to take care of (each child receives a particular room to care for on their fifteenth birthday). She also gets a rather nasty surprise in the form of the traditional waffle breakfast that just doesn't smell right. Come to find out, her parents had to let their cook go, and now all of the Martins will be working a little harder.

And then, a guest comes. She's no ordinary guest, and she takes full advantage of using Scarlett to help her. At first, Mrs. Amberson is nice enough (with some rather expensive tastes) but then, she steps in and helps out Scarlett's brother Spencer's play and chaos ensues. Her well-meaning meddling could mean the end for Spencer's acting career, Scarlett's hope of ever leaving the hotel again, losing her potential love interest, and the very survival of the hotel. In the end, all four Martin children will have to come together to do something their parents would never approve of...or would they?

The Martin children have their `favorite' sibling like in many families, but there are some added twists: what happened to Marlene when she was younger that affected the entire family, Lola's boyfriend plays a part in the sibling rivalry, and the pair-ups between the siblings. I love the banter between Scarlett and her brother Spencer, and Lola has an obviously special relationship with Marlene. To me, this makes the family seem a lot more real - the dynamics are moving around and changing and make it so believable absorbing. Once you get to know Mrs. Amberson and her involvement in what may be less-than-nice activities will keep you on the edge of your seat to see if it will all come out right in the end, or if Scarlett will really lose it if things blow up in their faces.

I have to say, this was a rip-roaring read. I enjoyed every minute of it. I'm quite excited for the sequel!

Summary: Cute story
Comment: Summer has never looked so bad to Scarlett Martin, starting with the news that she will have to help out more around the Hopewell, the hotel her family owns, instead of getting a summer job for much desired spending money. And on top of the Hopewell's economic woes, Scarlett has to deal with her older brother's failing acting career and her bratty little sister, not to mention having to take care of the Empire Suite, the hotel's grandest rooms. Scarlett is less than thrilled when the Empire Suite acquires a guest, Mrs. Amberson, a glamorous theater has-been, but this slightly wacky woman opens up Scarlett's world to all of life's possibilities, especially the ones in NYC. Enter in a bit of luck, Scarlett's older brother's gorgeous co-actor, a heavily disguised fairy godmother, and a historic feud, and this will be a summer like no other.

Johnson weaves a breezy, humorous, and heartwarming story in Suite Scarlett. She immediately captures the reader's attention with her unusual setting and cast, particularly lovable Scarlett. Scarlett seems slightly out of place among her still-in-love parents, her acting brother, her cancer-surviving little sister, and her trust fund-dating older sister, yet this only increases the reader's desires to see her shine. Though the plot is very enjoyable, I felt Scarlett fell a little short of true brilliance despite her resourcefulness and sheer determination. I think this is because Johnson didn't offer enough insight into her mind; I couldn't really connect with Scarlett's character beyond just sympathy for whatever situation she was in. however, this book was still very fun for me to read because of the frequent humor and Mrs. Amberson, Scarlett's not infallible fairy godmother, and just the general sweetness of how things tend to work out.

Good but not fabulous, I recommend Suite Scarlett as a quick summer read to those who enjoyed Johnson's other novels, such as 13 Little Blue Envelopes and The Burmudez Triangle, or Fringe Benefits by Valerie Frankel, Airhead by Meg Cabot, and Dream Girl by Lauren Mechling. I look forward to catching the continuation of Scarlett's story in Scarlett Fever.

Summary: a must read for New Yorkers and theater lovers and everyone in between
Comment: Maureen Johnson's novel Suite Scarlett (2008) focuses on Scarlett Martin and her family who live in the Hopewell Hotel in the heart of New York City. That might sound like a dream come true but just ask Scarlett about her fifteenth birthday and it's easy to see the sometimes harsh realities that owning and running a hotel can really entail.

The Hopewell hotel has been around since 1929 and has belonged to the Hopewell family for just as long. While the hotel can't compete with some of its ritzier neighbors in terms of luxuries on offer, the Hopewell does have some unique benefits including custom furnishings by a prestigious (fictional) Jazz Age designer, connections to the history of the city and its ever-glamorous theater life. In order to lower maintenance costs for the hotel, the Martins have come up with a unique tradition. On their fifteenth birthday every child receives a hotel suite thereby also inheriting the housekeeping duties and guest services connected to said suite.

Scarlett is pretty sure such duties will not do much to alleviate the dullness of her summer vacation since the Hopewell is always chronically under-booked. Unlike Scarlett, her siblings have a lot to manage this summer: Eighteen-year-old Lola is busy juggling family obligations, a job she loves, and a high maintenance boyfriend with an equally high balance in his bank account; eleven-year-old Marlene, the youngest Martin, does not share Scarlett's summer doldrums since her survivor's club keep her social calendar plenty full (have you been on a morning TV show yet?); meanwhile nineteen-year-old Spencer, a talented actor with a fondness for physical comedy is face with an ultimatum that could end his acting career before its even started.

Everything changes when the larger-than-life Mrs. Amberson checks into the Empire Suite (Scarlett's suite) and takes her on an assistant in everything from running errands to getting reacquainted with the City and writing the biography of her life. Already swept up in Mrs. Amberson's whirlwind, Scarlett also finds herself swept off her feet when she meets Eric the gorgeous fellow actor in a production of Hamlet that might just save Spencer's career--if the show ever opens.

Suite Scarlett holds a lot of appeal for a variety of readers. Being a book by Maureen Johnson it is, of course, very funny. It also has many tidbits about New York that will interest anyone who has a special place for that big apple in their hearts. Most of all, this book has a lot of appeal for theater lovers. Before becoming a published novelist Johnson worked as a dramaturg in the theater world (a dramaturg basically being the person who makes sure every single aspect of a show runs smoothly while directors and other theater types focus less on the big picture). Johnson brings all of that knowledge to this book to really bring the theatrical world that Spencer and, by extension, Scarlett come to inhabit as the plot progresses.

While this story has a bit of romance and humor and excitement, it is really a novel about family, specifically siblings. Each of the Martin children are vibrantly described on the page. Spencer in particular is a character that readers will love to love. In fact, the only problem with Suite Scarlett is that with such an awesome brother as Spencer, Scarlett's love interest Eric pales by comparison. All the same, this book has something for everyone and is sure to leave readers with a smile on their face.

Summary: super suite!!
Comment: Shakespeare, New York, a cute southern boy and dead rodents. Can it get any better? Although the cover and the living-in-a-hotel plot may make Suite Scarlett seem like a Maddie from The Suite Life novel, rest assured, you could not be more wrong. The accurate and endearing portrayal of family dynamics is remarkable (especially for an only child author). Mrs. Amberson, always one step ahead, leaves you amused and dumbfounded in a haze of essential oil and excellent plot twists.
Highlights: great epigraphs at the start of each chapter detailing the history of the art deco Hopewell hotel, hilarious characters and witty writing
Lowlights: First books in the series setting a really high bar that can't be matched. Even Jo Rowling couldn't do it. Having to wait for second book

Summary: Reserve your own Suite!
Comment: A warning: Maureen Johnson books cannot be put down, if you don't pay attention you could miss your bus stop. Don't say I didn't warn you. But even if you end up miles from home, you'll have a head full of funny characters and a clever story to keep you company as you walk home. Just remember that time with Spencer and you'll smile and hardly notice you wore the wrong shoes.

Great book to take to the beach, but please don't forget the sunscreen!
