Although a year has passed, not a day goes by without Meggie thinking of INKHEART, the book whose characters became real. But for Dustfinger, the fire-eater brought into being from words, the need to return to the tale has become desperate. When he finds a crooked storyteller with the ability to read him back, Dustfinger leaves behind his young apprentice Farid and plunges into the medieval world of his past. Distraught, Farid goes in search of Meggie, and before long, both are caught inside the book, too. But the story is threatening to evolve in ways neither of them could ever have imagined.

Summary: Inkspell(Inkheart Trilogy)
Comment: Inkspell was a very good book. The whole time I was reading it, I did not want to put it down. I liked Inkheart, too. Inkspell was full of action and mystery. It would be great for older children, also. It was a great read.

Summary: My Favorite of the Series
Comment: If you love books, chances are you'll love this series. It's got everything Adventure, Love, Bad Guys, Drama, Comedy, you name it this series has it. Anyone can crack this book open and relate to one of the characters, Dustfinger being one of mine. I love the Inkworld, Funke describes it so vividly it's like she wrote you into the world itself. These books make you want to read aloud more and more often. You find yourself wishing that you had the power to read things out of their stories. It's an amazing book, I'm on my third time reading it. I can't wait to see more from Funke!

Summary: Audio Reader Stinks, What a Shame
Comment: After hearing Lynn Redgrave read Inkheart, I was so eager for more, but Brendan Fraser, the reader, is so concentrated on his different accents and shallow interpretation that I can only listen for a bit without shaking my head and wondering why they hired him for the reading. He gets in the way of the story. Someone in the Marketing Department must have thought he was good, what a pity. I'd rather have a bland reader and then at least I could use my own imagination. There is no maturity and not much warmth in his voice. I hope someone else reads it someday. Better read it in book form, I say. Best of Luck to You All and Happy Audio Experiences!!

Summary: Trying to control the story from the inside
Comment: In this sequel to "Inkheart" we learn why Dustfinger was so anxious to return home, as he finds a new reader, Orpheus, to send him back. But he's not the only one longing to go to the inkworld. Meggie, having heard her mother's stories, manages to read herself and Farid there. And Mortola, believing her son Capricorn will still be alive in the inkworld, gets Orpheus to read not only herself but Basta and Meggie's parents into the book as well. But Fenoglio's world in the book is spinning out of control, and his means of influence are limited. While some are happy to be there, others are facing imprisonment and even death.
While not as intense and unremitting as "Inkheart," the story nonetheless is every bit as compelling. You sense the frustration of the characters as they struggle to deal with difficult circumstances. And not only do they face real consequences for what happens in the inkworld, they often have little influence. It's still a dark story, but I can see why my children have enjoyed it so much, although I'm not sure I agree it's appropriate for kids under 10. And while there's less profanity than in the first book, it's still more than I'd like to hear in a children's book. But as I think about the story and the way it's written it becomes very evident how well-written it is, and just how talented of a writer Ms. Funke is.
Unfortunately, the reading for the audio book wasn't nearly as good as Lynn Redgrave in the first one. Brendan Frasier reads with a great deal of enthusiasm but unfortunately a bit too much theatrics. I listened to this in my office and his frequent changes in volume - from a whisper to shouting - left me continually adjusting the speakers and wanting to close the door. Some of the voices he uses are quite annoying, such as the screechy Eleanor, but he also uses a such wide variety of accents that it becomes distracting. He's evidently more talented than I would have guessed from some of his movies, but his talents are not as well suited to audio books. 4 stars for the book, but only 3 for the audio book.

Summary: This one takes place almost entirely in the fantasy world
Comment: After reviewing Inkheart it's only right for me to tell everyone about the next book in the series, Inkspell.
Where that story took place mostly in the real-world, this one takes place almost entirely in the fantasy one.
Story overview:
A year after the happenings of Inkheart, Meggie can't help but to think of the magical world she only had a small glimpse of.
Farid convinces Meggie that going to the ink world is the best thing for them both to do, and so, with a voice perhaps even greater than her father's, Meggie reads them there. By one way or another, Dustfinger, Basta, Mortola, Mortimer (Mo), and Resa all find themselves in this fantasy world.
If they thought Capricorn was bad, then that's only because they had yet to meet the dreaded Adderhead; tyrant of the ink world.
Among the people from the real-world is Fenoglio, the author of Inkheart, who finds that he is less in control than he would like, and so he vows to put an end to the Adderhead. With Meggie's voice and Fenoglio's words, they try to put things right, only to find that perhaps their attempts simply make matters worse.
My thoughts:
I liked this book better than Inkheart, and I did really like Inkheart. There are a few places where I found the story dragged on, but I wasn't disappointed by trudging through them.
