Summary: Must Read
Comment: For those of you who liked The Giver, this book is a must-read! It is advertised as the sequel to The Giver, but does not continue the story. Therefore, you can enjoy this book even without ever having read the first.
Lois Lowry explains that, "in the distant future, after the world we know has wrecked itself, . . . new kinds of societies will emerge." Gathering Blue is about a girl named Kira who lives in one such society. The story begins with Kira mourning her mother's death. She is left with nothing: no house, no money, no family (her father died before she was born). Kira's story is one of courage as she does what's "right" in the midst of danger.
Lowry's writing is so simple yet captivating that you will not be able to put the book down. With 215 pages and having been written for young adults, you can easily finish it in one day. The concepts portrayed are thought-provoking and applicable to our own lives, despite the sci-fi genre.
I highly recommend Gathering Blue and look forward to reading its own sequel, Messenger.

Summary: Another Gripping Lowry Book...
Comment: I only recently learned there were two loose sequels to 'The Giver', a book I absolutely love. After re-reading Giver, I immediately picked up 'Gathering Blue' and found it to be a very good book as well. It didn't have quite the impact 'The Giver' had, but a great story nonetheless.
I was a little disappointed not to learn anything about Jonas or where he ended up, but I started the last book 'Messenger' today, and see that it gives us a little more information. It's strange to me though just how different Kira's community is from Jonas's. Jonas's old community, while incredibly regimented, seemed to be very technologically advanced, while Kira's lacks simple things such as running water for the towns people. These two places exist at the same time, so I wonder why such the sharp contrast. How did Jonas's people acquire all their knowledge while other villages reverted back to the dark ages?
Overall, I liked the story and the characters. I didn't really feel completely satisfied with the ending though...it seemed things were rushed at the very end. Kira never gave a reason for staying and not leaving with Matt and the man. She knew the truth of her community, and the power the council members had, why would she stay? I only just started 'Messenger', and am hoping this final book cleans up the story a bit. I'm definitely interested in seeing how everything ties together.

Summary: Haunting
Comment: It has taken me years to venture back into Lois Lowry's twisted future. The world of Kira, despite its notable lack of technology, is in many ways frighteningly similar to the world of "The Giver"--people manipulated and chosen based on physical prowess. I understand how that might be necessary for a primitive-like society, but it is still heartbreaking. Fortunately, Kira has a gift with needle and thread that means her salvation. Lowry's writing is haunting--I must give her that--and I was spellbound the entire novel. I don't know if it has the same impact as "The Giver" but it certainly is a worthy story and companion book.

Summary: Blue....
Comment: Lois Lowry provides a little look into a fantasy world. No special powers, luckily, but it is an imaginary land with imaginary people. They could exist though, people could be like that... As the book opens our special girl is somewhat even luck to be alive.. Usually when a child is born with a disfigurement they are sent out to die, but Kira, now a teenager was luckily spared. The words "Gathering Blue" can have more then one connotation, but both may apply here. As you read the book, look occasionally to the front cover to gain insight to the heart that flows between the pages.

Summary: A Good Read
Comment: I thought this story was a pretty good read but if you're looking for a fast-paced story full of action, you'll probably be disappointed.
All in all, I thought this was a good book and if you like Lois Lowry's other books then this is definitely a story worth picking up.
