Comment: I loved every page of this book and used it throughout my child's infancy and toddlerhood. She helps you set the stage so well that you really don't need it much after that except as a touchstone. I had a student who became a mother at 14, whose own mother was no help with the baby. I gave her my copy and told her, "Just read the chapter that applies to him this month and it won't be too much." It may have saved that baby's life!

Comment: As a first-time mother-to-be, I had the good fortune of accidentally discovering this wonderful book in an earlier edition. It was the only one of its kind in the bookstore at the University where I worked, so I trusted that it would be a good guide. It was.

My son is 28 years old, now, and about to be a first-time father. I can think of no better gift to give him than Penelope Leach's treatise on the child from birth to five. Viewing the growth and learning process from the child's point of view genuinely helped this once novice parent adapt and improvise to what, I'm sure, was the betterment of the child and the greater joy of the parent.

It will be worthwhile to read this book many times over.
