Wabi Sabi, a little cat in Kyoto, Japan, had never thought much about her name until friends visiting from another land asked her owner what it meant.

At last, the master
Says, "That's hard to explain." And
That is all she says.

This unsatisfying answer sets Wabi Sabi on a journey to uncover the meaning of her name, and on the way discovers what wabi sabi is: a Japanese philosophy of seeing beauty in simplicity, the ordinary, and the imperfect.

Using spare text and haiku, Mark Reibstein weaves an extraordinary story about finding real beauty in unexpected places. Caldecott Medal-winning artist Ed Young complements the lyrical text with breathtaking collages. Together, they illustrate the unique world view that is wabi sabi.

Summary: Curious cat
Comment: I purchased the book for my neighbor, a young fellow who was celebrating "Boy's Day" (May 5). I almost kept the book although I am far from young. The story is very engaging and the illustrations are fantastic. Perfect for the folks who know cats, people who read to kids and kids (and the far from young who love kid's books).

Summary: What's in a name?
Comment: Wabi Sabi is the story of a cat who goes in search of the meaning of her name. Collage illustrations by Caldecott winner Ed Young are put together in a vertical manner so that each 2-page spread looks like a Japanese wall hanging. Lovely story, lovely book.

Customer Rating: 55555
Summary: Wabi Sabi
Comment: Mesmerizing cut-paper illustrations do justice to this simple tale, each page complete with a Haiku. Wabi Sabi, a brown cat in Japan, searches out the cultural meaning of her name and of this tale:

Fine but rough,
Beautiful but simple,
Comfortably warm.

Children ages 4-7 will pore over the pages.

Summary: Wabi Sabi
Comment: A gorgeous book! Beautiful unique collage illustrations, interesting story, haiku, and japanese cultural information. Enjoyed by the artist adults in the family, I think young children will enjoy the illustrations but the majority of the book is best appreciated by adults. This is a not to be missed book that will be opened and re-read many times.

Summary: wrong kanji character
Comment: such a beautiful book of art by Ed Young.
the only regret is that the kanji letter used on the cover for "wabi" is not correct. it means 'apologize'.
I wonder why no one could tell Mr. Young about it.
