Summary: Fancy Nancy Is WONDERFUL!
Comment: We purchased this as our daughter's first Fancy Nancy book to go with her new Fancy Nancy doll (whom she takes everywhere now. She asked our waitress for a high chair for Fancy Nancy today so, "she could sit at the table too".) She LOVES it! The words are fun and introduces little ones to bigger, yet understandable, expressive words. Our daughter's favorite so far is "zany". We cannot wait to purchase more and indulge ourselves in Nancy's fun, little world. What a great way for little girls to imagine, learn and grow into fine, young "princesses". Our thanks for a creative and spectacular line of much-needed little girl fun things. Video games - move over!

Comment: The Fancy Nancy books were recommended to us by family for our daughter, to help her develop her vocabulary in a fun, funny and witty way. Wonderfully written and excellently illustrated this book is both a pleasure to read and look at. Fancy Nancy in a sweet charming way introduces young readers to big words, but in such a way that the children will remember and be able to use them. What a wonderful little book. I cannot wait for more Fancy Nancy to come into our hands to read together.

Comment: All that glitters is not gold. Sometimes it is Fancy Nancy. She sparkles and glows without and within. This time she shares her words that glitter in "Fancy Nancy's Favorite Fancy Words From Accessories to Zany" and beyond.

How Jane O'Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser originated the concept of a small girl child who loves loves loves fancy was a glorious day in children's books. In a time when little girls wear shorts and tees to excel on the playing field and tailored suits in board rooms, Fancy Nancy comes as an anachronistic, delightful little girl in prissy, sparkly, glamorous costumes afire within to savor fancy things, including words.

Nancy's thought is that "fancy words are almost like magic," so she gives the reader fancy words for each letter of the alphabet. What a fun way to learn them! For each word, try to visualize the delightful artwork on mostly one, occasionally two pages:

Accessories--fancy extra stuff: There goes Nancy, dancing across the page, carrying baubles and beads, bows, hair stuff, plumes, for use as accessories.

Dapper--fancy, for a man: Her dad does not normally dress so dapper.

Fiasco--a big flop, a disaster: When Nancy dropped the parfaits, dessert was a fiasco!

Repondez s'il vous plait--fancy and French for "please answer." This is shortened to RSVP on invitations.

Understated--plain: Does Nancy ever wear understated fashion?

Yearn--to want really badly: Nancy yearns to visit Paris one day.

There: just a sampling of the 26 plus extra words Nancy presents to her readers. What a lovely way to learn vocabulary!

Comment: If you've never been introduced to Fancy Nancy, you don't know what you're missing! Nancy, besides being fancy, loves glitzy clothing, the outstanding Mrs. DeVine, her understated (see below) family, and anything and everything French!

Fancy Nancy is a xenophile (a person who loves foreign people and foreign things). She wishes she had a middle name, so that her monogram (your initials on something to show it's yours) would have three letters. She wishes she could go on an excursion (a special trip) to Paris, which she yearns for (wants really badly).

All in all, although her mother dresses in an understated (plain) wardrobe (collection of clothes), she knows that not everyone can be a Queen (a woman who rules over a kingdom).

What she does know, though, is that by reading this book, your vocabulary (all the words you know), will be greatly improved!

FANCY NANCY'S FAVORITE FANCY WORDS is a wonderful addition to the series, and the illustrations by Robin Preiss Glasser are, as always, just perfect for the story. This one is a keeper, especially for young girls who wear tiaras (a crown for a princess) and understand all about acessories (fancy extra stuff).
