A box is just a box . . . unless it's not a box. From mountain to rocket ship, a small rabbit shows that a box will go as far as the imagination allows.
Inspired by a memory of sitting in a box on her driveway with her sister, Antoinette Portis captures the thrill when pretend feels so real that it actually becomes real—when the imagination takes over and inside a cardboard box, a child is transported to a world where anything is possible.

Summary: My child wasn't interested even though I was
Comment: After reading the reviews on Amazon, I purchased this book for my 3.5 year old. When I opened it the first time, I thought, "Yes! This is really cool. My son will love it." But no, he cracked it open a couple of times and leafed through the pages, but he doesn't go back to it as he does with other books. Perhaps he's too young for it, but he is generally interested in books years beyond his level, so I don't think so. He doesn't need a book to show him what he could imagine a box to be. He already does it on his own.
I think many adults think this book would be loved by a young child because they think the book is cute and simplified enough for a preschooler's level. But I think it's oversimplified.

Summary: Simple and Original
Comment: Not a Box by Antoinette Portis, is a tribute to the age-old tradition of a child turning a box into something else, something deep within their imagination. Not a Box stars a rabbit and a box. Written in a question and answer format, an off the pages voice asks the rabbit:
"What are you doing with that box?"
Turn the page and the rabbit answers:
"It's not a box."
There on the page you see red lines drawn over the black box and the box is transformed into a pirate ship, a hot air balloon, a space ship (you get the idea).
The illustrations are spare and simple. And humorous. Somehow, Portis manages to make a stick figure bunny have lots of personality. In addition, the outside cover of the book is made to look and feel like a cardboard box, complete with a "This Side Up" on the back.
One of the beauties of this book is that it will appeal to very young children, as well as beginning readers (4, 5, and 6 year olds). Published in 2006, it's a classic in the works.

Summary: A wonderful book
Comment: I love Not a Box as do my students. This is a perfect picture book. Simple and engaging, with simple line drawings that quickly draw the reader in. The children laugh and giggle as they can certainly relate to the wonderful imagination of the main character. This book is definitely a must-have for any collection. Highly recommended.

Summary: Joy in Simplicity
Comment: This book demonstrates the simple joy of creativity...no cords, gadgets, hand-held buttons, noises,...you get the picture. Just a box and an imagination are all that a child needs to open a world of fun. The simple text will be quickly learned and repeated by a young child to "read" the book to themselves.
This is a keeper!

Summary: Fantastic
Comment: This book is an awesome book for little kids. My daughter is nearly 3 and absolutely loves this book. We first saw it read on Playschool in Australia. It is a great book about with a kids imagination anything can be made out of a box. It is not too tricky with the words so even though my daughter is too young to read she knows all the words off by heart.
