Comment: My Grandchildren loved this book. Their mother couldn't keep it on the bookshelf as they were always asking for it to be read to them. They had just returned from the beach when they reveived it, and the beach part was undoubtedly a favorite in the book. It is a fun story and the children, ages 4 and 2 couldn't get enough of it.

Comment: Once again Numeroff does a fantastic job! This is a great book. My daughter had cupcakes made for her 4th birthday and received this as a gift from her older sister :) She absolutely loves it. And loves that her older sister reads it to her!

Summary: Two boys' review: If you beat a horse to death
Comment: Against my better judgment, we picked up this book for bedtime reading with our 6-year old and 4-year old sons. We had already read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and gave that book a 3-star rating. This book is even less interesting.

Laura Numeroff created a trademarked series from these simplistic books, switching the mouse for a moose, a pig and, in this case, a cat. In place of a story, Numeroff strings together a bizarre series of cause and effect examples that are neither interesting nor funny. Here's an excerpt that illustrates my point:

"The whale will remind him of the science museum. He'll ask you to take him there. First he'll find the dinosaurs. Then he'll visit the Hall of Apes."

Over four pages, the cat transitions from a river to a merry-go-round, onto a science museum and then back to the beach. Do you find that confusing? Well, you are not alone.

In summary, I submit this series is missing an appropriate title, "If You Beat a Horse to Death." This book earns a 1-star rating, as there are many better options for young children.

Comment: We enjoyed this book and got one to donate to my pre-schoolers classroom for her "birthday book" donation. It was cute and similar to the other books, you know what to expect.
