If a hungry little traveler shows up at your house, you might want to give him a cookie. If you give him a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk. He'll want to look in a mirror to make sure he doesn't have a milk mustache, and then he'll ask for a pair of scissors to give himself a trim....
The consequences of giving a cookie to this energetic mouse run the young host ragged, but young readers will come away smiling at the antics that tumble like dominoes through the pages of this delightful picture book.

Summary: A Hilarious Flight of Fancy
Comment: This is the beginning of an enormously popular series of books. Each is made up of a chain of fanciful interactions between a child and an animal. In this one, a boy shares one of his cookies with a mouse, who asks for milk, then needs a straw to drink it with; on giving himself a milk moustache he asks to use a mirror, and on looking in the mirror decides he needs a haircut. Each subsequent event is more absurd than the last, and the story ends with the mouse asking for a cookie.
While not high art, the illustrations are cheerfully, skillfully and whimsically drawn, and they tell the story so that little text is necessary. There is a level of cultural literacy that is necessary before children can appreciate some of the humor, but there is enough here to appeal to a pretty wide age range, especially children who don't enjoy reading longer stories. Several from this set are available from the public library or elsewhere with a read-aloud recording, to which are added some funny songs and interesting commentary.

Summary: A book every kid should have
Comment: Who doesn't love this book? All the "If you give a...." books are fun for kids, and also useful if you are teaching lessons on cause and effect.

Summary: CD adds fun
Comment: The CD is great fun for kids (mine: 3 and 5) with the included game and the mistake-song. I think the book really needs to be somewhat larger for you to appreciate the details of the great pictures. They get a little lost in the small format.
