Summary: Best toddler puzzle we have, hands down!

My almost 2.5 year old is a puzzle lover and this is his favorite BY FAR. The chunky pieces are so easy for him to pick up and manipulate, yet the puzzle is pretty challenging for him. So, when he gets them all in the right place, he is so excited and proud.

What I like about this puzzle is that he has to think of what is on each piece (headlights, firehose, "back seat driver", etc) in order to know where it goes. Because the pieces don't lock together, it's all about the content on each puzzle piece and that is very engaging for him.

And this puzzle is super crazy sturdy. I have the feeling it will last for a very long time. Some toys are destined for the grandkids to play with them, and this is one of them.

Comment: We purchased this puzzle for my son when he was 2 years 10 months. He had a hard time at first figuring out where the pieces went, mostly because he wasn't used to the idea of a "jigsaw" puzzle yet.

By the time he was 3 years old, he could do this puzzle quickly, but he still has to think about where the pieces go. I wish Melissa and Doug made more advanced puzzles that are chunky like this. My son finds the pieces easier to manipulate than other puzzles with the small red pegs or those that are thin and wooden or cardboard and interlock. If your child is between the basic chunky puzzles by Melissa and Doug and the typical 24-40 piece jigsaw, this is a nice transition puzzle.

Comment: This is my son's favorite puzzle. It's chunky so he can handle the pieces easily and it's challenging enough for a 2 year old. He loves it so much, he still does it at 32 months old!

Summary: Great multi-piece wooden puzzle
Comment: This is a great puzzle--I disagree with the first reviewer that it doesn't make sense. It is an excellent next step up from the "one piece per hole" wooden puzzles. Both my kids started playing with this around age 2. They liked the challenge of multiple pieces but still were not quite ready for the fine-motor skills required to snap jigsaw pieces together.
The puzzle pieces sit in a nice wooden board that has the picture underneath, so there is a visual cue for how to put the pieces in. The pieces are chunky and easy to grasp. I'm actually looking for another puzzle like this for my daughter!

Summary: There are better fire truck puzzles out there
Comment: My two year old loves puzzles and he loves fire trucks, but this puzzle was a disappointment.

This is not a good puzzle. There are basically two kinds of good puzzles -- puzzles where the shapes are related to the subject of the puzzle, and puzzles where the shapes are not related to the subject, but instead are designed to "lock" together. This puzzle is neither. The shapes do not lock together, neither do the relate particularly well to the pieces of the fire truck. The result is a puzzle that is difficult and frustrating for a toddler. My son could put in the wheels, the dog, and the fire hydrant -- but then he had to stop and ask me to put the rest of the puzzle together. The pieces do not give him the right clues -- Neither the picture nor the shapes of the pieces give him good insight into how to put the fire truck together.

This being said, he does love to watch me put the puzzle together, because when I am done we have a big red fire truck.

Also, and here I may be being a little over-sensitive, the figure of the African American fireman looks a little too much like a minstel-show figure in blackface. I am taking another star off for insensitive design.

If you want a good puzzle, although pitched at a slightly older crowd (3+), the Melissa and Doug "In a Box" puzzles are a good choice. My son just loves the "Melissa and Doug Deluxe Vehicles In a Box Jigsaw Puzzles" and the "Melissa and Doug In a Box Deluxe Construction In a Box Jigsaw Puzzles." These are 12-piece puzzles with pieces that "lock" together. At 27 months, my son does need some help putting them together, but when we get these pieces together he is so pleased. The pieces "lock" with a satisfying precision, progress is clear, and the design revealed by the finished puzzle is both satisfyingly detailed and really cute.
