CUSTOMER REVIEWS:

Customer Rating: 55555
Summary: A classic, very practical, great for all levels
Comment: Does it work? Yes. Does it work for every family? Probably not, but does any aspect of parenting? This book will give you a good indication of whether it's for you or not. It's my favourite book on the topic. My comments are about the 2008 version with colour photos. There are four parts.

Part 1 has a chapter on how to get started with infants; one on how to get started with older babies; one about baby signals including descriptions, sketches and photos; and a review of medical research. It offers a lot of practical advice for handling challenges that may arise such as a potty pause, and lists of tips for different situations and ages. It discusses the environmental benefits, and dispels myths that many of us encounter.

Parts 2 and 3 contain detailed testimonials by parents from different countries, including one about a family with twins. These are inspirational and supportive.

Part 4 is about cross-cultural studies, with anthropological reports from many different cultures. In my experience, no other book of this genre comes close to the wealth of material in this section.

Throughout, the graphics are most helpful, showing many different positions, types of equipment and potty places to keep children interested. Compared to other books, this one has many more photos plus they are large and clear.

The word Training in the title concerned me before I read the book, but after reading the explanation it no longer bothers me: "The word training is used in the positive sense of a loving exchange between mother and baby and should never be misconstrued in the negative sense of pressure, rigidity and coercion." This spirit of parent-child cooperation is encouraged in different ways including the section about the no-nos (for example, no punishing, no negativity).

In short, it's a classic well worth reading.

Summary: Not a good introduction, but contains some fascinating anthropology
Comment: If you're looking for a how-to guide to help you figure out how to actually apply the method, don't start with this book. (Instead, I would recommend The Diaper-Free Baby: The Natural Toilet Training Alternative.) It's really long, rambling, and repetitive, with a lot of vague ideas about trusting your intuition and not a lot of clear directions for how to actually implement the method. After reading this book I felt pretty overwhelmed and not sure where to start.

It's also really judgmental and contradictory. The author frequently asserts, often in the same paragraph, both that whatever you want to do is OK and that if you don't do it her way you might permanently traumatize your child. The anthropologists' accounts in the last section are also inconsistent with her claims in the rest of the book. For example, she talks a lot about critical windows and says it will be a lot harder after 5 months. But when you read about what people in other countries actually do, it turns out that a lot of them don't start till 6 months or later, and it seems to work just fine for them. (It also worked fine for us!)

The last section of this book, which summarizes anthropologists' accounts of toilet training methods throughout the world, is absolutely fascinating. It's amazing to see the range of different techniques and it really helps put the standard child-rearing practices in this country into perspective. If you're into that kind of thing, it's definitely worth checking out this book.

(Note: this review is actually for the 2nd edition. I haven't read the 3rd edition, so maybe the problems discussed above have been fixed.)

Summary: Informative but not as practical
Comment: It has a large section on how infant potty training is used all over the world, but it doesn't have as much PRACTICAL information as I need -- like the various sign babies use, how to really get started. It's very brief on info like that.

Summary: Infants Can Use the Potty
Comment: Imagine my surprise when my one month old baby began using the potty for elminating! I had read about it and didn't really expect it to work. Now, my daughter is 18 months and using the potty regularly. She is in panties during the day but has a diaper at night. That is remarkably different from my first daughter who was in diapers until well after 2 years old.

Boucke has some fabulous ideas and tips. She has first hand experience and is knowledgeable too. To get a fuller perspective on infant pottying, I recommend getting a variety of different books on the topic.

Summary: Very practical and comprehensive...
Comment: After reading another book on the subject of infant potty training, I was looking for something more practical and "How-to." I found what I was looking for in this book.

Though there are many pages, it is an easy read. I read it fairly quickly and began implementing its suggestions even before I was done reading. Our daughter is nine months old now, and we have been "potty training" her since she was two and a half months. She has been learning to control the necessary muscles more and more over the course of time.

This is an amazing concept: Instead of just ignoring the bodily functions and then suddenly, at around 2 or 3 years old, trying to teach the baby to control them and develop those muscles, we are helping her as she grows. If the baby can tell her mother or father that she is hungry or tired or upset or happy, couldn't he communicate the urge to go? Of course the baby may not understand the whole picture like we do, but he knows he feels something.

We thought, "Hey let's try it and see how it goes." We are thrilled that we did. Sometimes, like on car rides or during certain circumstances, we cannot fully be aware of our daughter's pottying needs. That's ok. As much as possible, we have learned to communicate with each other and take her to pee or poo as often as we can. Some days, especially the older she gets, we hardly miss one pee. Other days, we miss a bunch.

In the meantime, she is in cloth diapers, and at night we do use a natural disposable. However, when she got up this morning, she was DRY! At nine months, her little muscles are learning to be controled.

I say all this to hopefully convey that this method works, and it is not a new idea. It is a very reasonable, practical, healthier, and common sense way of dealing with an issue that is inevitable. What do you think they did before diapers? What do you think others do in countries where they do not have diapers readily available?

We felt closer to our daughter after beginning to work with her on potty training. We felt that we were meeting a need for her and with her that we were not meeting before.

Plus it is really nice to have the pee, and especially the poo, go into the toilet instead of the diaper and all over the diaper covered area.

I highly recommend this book. It is worth the effort to read and see if this is a method you would like to bring home to your family. I believe you will see that it is not as difficult or unachievable as you may think.
