In a continuation of the tactics mini-series, this new book describes and analyzes the physical tactics of the close-quarter fighting that took place in the ruined cities on both the Western and Eastern Fronts of World War II. Street-to-street fighting in cities was not a new development, but the bombed-out shells of cities and advances in weaponry meant that World War II took it to a new level of savagery and violence.

New tactics developed around the defenses that ruined cities offered. This book examines these tactics, describing how a small group of infantry could now destroy whole tank units for very little cost before melting away into the cities' rubble. It also analyzes the need for infantry units to clear ruins of the enemy, and looks at how this was done, and the cost of the slow house-to-house fighting that was seen across the war, from Stalingrad to Berlin. Summary: A Risk You Accept When Purchasing On-Line
Comment: Had I seen this book in a store and had the opportunity to flip through the pages, I would not have purchased this book for even a dollar. Because the material is so vague and makes ridiculous references to "German (and local) political murder squads", it is boring even just to peruse. There are plenty of goofy little color cartoons but they don't communicate anything useful. You won't learn much from this book other than it is possible to waste your money when purchasing a book before reviewing it in a store.

Comment: Very Good! Explaines the difficulties of attacking an occupied town, where every opening is a possible deathtrap and every street a potential fire zone. Covers everything from Molatov cocktails to sewer fighting. Lots of good graphics to explain what it looks like. A great help to modelers as well as history buffs.

Summary: Another valuable addition
Comment: This work adds to the already considerable number of works on infantry tactics in WWII by Osprey.

The book follows the 'how and with what' formula that makes all the previous works so valuable to the reader. It outlines basic tactics and equipment and the national variations that occured during the second world war. The colour plates and pictures represent clearly what is described in the text.

As with the other works this gives the reader an insight as to how history was accomplished. It will shed new light on any history being read and make that history as clear as it can be made to someone in an armchair. The book often refers readers to source material if a more in depth understanding is wanted.

It is a worthwhile work by itself and when taken with it's preceeding books a short cut to understanding how military history was accomplished.
