Summary: How to Build Dioramas-one way
Comment: An overveiw, full of specific tips, some that can keep you busy a long time themselves, Paine, certainly has a wide range of knowledge, and that is the tone of this book. It tries to cover the entirety of a subject with endless diversity, so that there is no time for multiple ideas on a single aspect. There are attempts to offer some different approaches on some things, but they are mapped out as to what is best, though that is likely to be very subjective. There are certain instructions givin that may limit a novice, more than help him or her move along, but that is typical of entry-level instruction. the works shown however, are , in many cases, master-level, and an impession is givin that all those beginner steps were all that was used to get there.
An example would be the authors love of the use of Celluclay. It is a messy, custom-mix paper-mache he mixes in a food processor(not mine thanx)and uses in Every single case to form his landscape basework(the backbone of the entire diorama process). He waits an indeterminate amount of time for the stuff to dry, and deals with its shrink, mess, & watercontent, and
never suggests that anything else may be used. Other writtings on the same subject will note a choice of many approaches for this importaint building step. Many use florest foam, styrofoam, foamcore, spackle, modeling compounds, or often a combo of these. It has been nearly ten years since the books writing, maybe there was no choice back then.
The book contains some really great stuff about classic shadowbox diaramas that are likely not what you are looking to study, but show some very interesting lost art aproaches, and wonderful model-building examples.
Over-all a good read for a modeler of any genre, it would have been better had it been more about all the methods available, that just how Sheperd Paine does things.

Summary: Good book, but not much new from the previous edition
Comment: The book details how to construct dioramas. No problems whatsoever on that end. Very useful tips are introduced and pretty detailed. Unfortunately, this new edition lacks much of any significant new information (even editing) as compared to the previous edition - to boot, most of the older edition copies can be purchased at a much reduced rate as compared to this one. In either event, if you need to find out how to make useful and realistic dioramas for your plastic models, this book is worth the money either way.

Summary: dfioramas
Comment: Sheperd Paine is a master of the diorama. This little book is a very good example of his work and is full of techniques and "how to" .
It is a welcome addition to any modeler's library who wishes to attempt making dioramas.
WARNING!! You will be constantly asking "How did he make it so 'life-like'?"
and be "green with envy" when you see the full color photo's of his work.
But fear-not; he explains how he did it and how you can too.

Summary: This book is timeless
Comment: The book covers just about anything there is to know about dioramas. Planning, composition, groundwork, superdetailing models, battle damage, weathering, painting figures... Forced perspective and shadowboxes are also discussed. Many types of dioramas are shown, making the book interesting to almost every type of modeler.
The book shows its age in places, for example in chapter on model photography only film SLR cameras are discussed, figure painting is only shown using oils, etc. But when the book was written is truly unimportant in this case. It's not only an excellent modeling manual, but a source of inspiration.
If you have the first edition, you can skip this one. But if not, buy it; you won't regret it.

Summary: A great place to start
Comment: This book is a great place to start your journey into scale modeling. Although the title suggests that the focus of the book is simply dioramas, that is not true. Shep Paine takes us through several basic and intermediate steps concerning the completion of the model itself before addressing the diorama as a whole. The chapters on figure modification are worth the cost of the book itself.
Highest recommendation.
