Comment: It was everything I wanted. This is the second time I have done this review.

Summary: Great for armchair travelers but that's about it
Comment: I have traveled through India several times for several months each time, and this winter I will be meeting my parents there and taking them on tour across the country. I always rely on the latest edition of my trusty Lonely Planet (LP) guide which, though low on frills, can get me to any destination in the country, find a place to stay and get safely fed. That's not to say LP is exhaustive, but it definitely covers the bases.
My mother is fond of Eyewitness travel guides, so she bought it in anticipation of the trip. I had lent her my LP and asked for it back to start working out our travel details, but got the Eyewitness instead, which is just a hair shy of completely useless for practical travel. As advertised it is filled with 3-D diagrams and color photos of famous sites, which are well-rendered and gorgeous, but I am taking my parents to these sites so they can see them in 3-D themselves! Instead of filling pages with useful info like how to get from place to place, this thing is a picture book for people who dream of going to India but probably will never make it. I guess it's a substitute for the real thing, but only if the closest you'll get to India is this book and an armchair.
This guide gets no stars on the practical level: it is an extremely bad idea to travel to India with this as your only guide. If someone else will do all the guiding for you and all you have to do is occasionally step off the AC bus to wade through the walas, the 3-D layouts may just help you navigate sites (as if the signs and actual monuments won't). I won't tell my mom not to bring it, but I definitely won't be carrying it for her.

Comment: I bought this guide for my husband as it is his dream to go to India. We have other DK books and they are great. We love this guide and will be buying more of it's type in the future for sure.

Comment: I think it would be best to use this book only when you are chosing where you want to go in India. It's very broad and has only 10 - 20 pages for each state, and some of the major cities. I went to only 6 cities while I was in country so I didn't need at least 80% of it. It was very frustrating to try to plan out sightseeing the night before because there just wasn't enough information and I wondered what I was missing. It was also very heavy - I almost left it behind a few times because I knew it wouldn't be of much use at my next stop! Your travel guide should not feel so expendable.
It does have very beautiful pictures and some good advice but all in all I think you would do better with something more detailed that concentrates on the specific area you are travelling to. Just peruse this one at the bookstore, get some ideas, then put it back on the shelf!! Sorry Eyewitness Travel!

Summary: Perfect to prepare a trip
Comment: If you don't know anything about India and want to visit this huge country...this guide is perfect for you.
Very nice pictures of all main touristic attractions can help you decide what you want to see and where you want to go. It really inspires traveling there.
I first owned the Lonely Planet which is much better at giving you recommended itineraries and routes to get to specific places, as well as cheap but comfortable hotels, but which lacks the visual part to help decide where to go in the first place.
Both guides are quite heavy and rather inconvenient to carry on a trip. I would recommend making photocopies of important pages only to take with you.
Unlike other guides, you are likely to read this one again after your trip to see what you missed, what you want to visit next, compare the pictures you took...this is a good investment.
Why only 4 stars ? Well, the restaurants section is unnecessary in my opinion (especially because it lacks maps to tell you where there are), and the price categories of hotels are too imprecise and sometimes wrong (some hotels double their prices during the peak season).
