Kathy Reichs blasts into Patricia Cornwell territory -- and onto the New York Times bestseller list -- with this critically acclaimed debut novel inspired by Reichs' own career. Dr. Temperance Brennan, the wry, impassioned director of forensic anthropology for the province of Quebec, is driven to unravel shocking acts of violence by reading the bones of the dead.

In the year since Tempe left behind a shaky marriage in North Carolina, work has often preempted her weekend plans to explore Quebec. But when an unidentified female corpse is discovered meticulously dismembered and stashed in garbage bags, Tempe detects an alarming pattern within the grisly handiwork -- and her professional detachment gives way to a harrowing search for a killer in the city's winding streets. With little help from the police, Tempe calls on her expertise, honed in the isolated intensity of the autopsy suite, to investigate on her own. But her determined chase is about to place those closest to her -- her best friend and her daughter -- in mortal danger....

Summary: Another Level...
Comment: Kathy Reichs takes the genre to another level with intelligent "whodunits" that entertain and educate. I've read every book she has written, most within days of their release. She is able to spin a yarn that feels real and makes your heart beat faster. You may be inclined to miss a meal (or even an appointment) between the covers of any one of her literary endeavors. The only down side is that she has spoiled me, and I have difficulty enjoying my pre Reichs favs...James who? Patricia who? The Kellerman clan does help get me through between Reichs releases...( Jonathan,Faye,Jesse) If Kathy Reichs is ever in your area...she is even more interesting "live"! Very smart, entertaining, articulate...gracious with a quick wit...all of the above shines through in her writing.
Definately can't go wrong...start at the beginning of the series to get the most out of the character development. Enjoy!

Summary: Very gory, bad plot, mediocre writing
Comment: In the words of Kathy Reichs, I needed this book like I needed an yeast infection. Obviously I heard about Reichs because of the Fox "Bones" tv series, and I knew not to expect anything similar to the show, so I was not disappointed by the differences between the two. Though I like the police procedural tv show it turns out that the graphic descriptions in print are much harder to read. I was literally nauseated while reading the VERY explicit descriptions of the mutilation and decomposition of the bodies. This is a personal preference problem however. I was grossed out. I may still have recommended the book to gore lovers if it weren't so poorly written. The premise of Brennan's protagonism is the uselessness, sexism and stupidity of the Quebec police force, her actions in pursuit of the killer are so reckless and frankly dumb that I could not help but blame the author for putting her character in such ridiculous situations. A medical examiner, Brennan at one point decides to go in search of a long dead body, on her own, in the middle of the night, and in the middle of a thunderstorm. Reichs' writing could also improve, but this being her first book I am sure that it has over the years, though I don't think I will bother checking her subsequent work. I am surprised this got an award.

Summary: A promising start for the series!
Comment: This book has been coming up on my on my amazon recommendation list for quite some time so I finally decided to give it a shot.

I'll admit it took me a while to get into this one. Not because it started off slow and surely not because I didn't like the main character. It just happened that the more I read and the more the personality of Tempe Brennan came to light over the course of the book the more I enjoyed it.

This is a good solid mystery. I enjoy forensic types of books. I'm a fan of Robin Cook and I also enjoy Ariana Franklin's Mistress of the ARt of Death series. While that takes place hundreds of years ago, it still deals with a savvy forensic doctor of sorts that seems to get in way over her head. Deja Dead is a modern version of that so it's right up my alley.

Tempe Brennan goes above and beyond her job description and puts togehter the peices of a series related murders that even the police are reluctant to do. They don't want to think that it's a possible serial killer but Tempe's hunch proves them wrong and gets her into a lot of trouble as a result!

I'm definetly going to read the other books in this series because it seems to me that Tempe's character is only going to get more interesting as she reveals more of herself chapter by chapter, and I want to see where Reichs takes the character.

A good read for anybody who's a fan of a good forensic mystery.

Summary: Intense, Impressive, Imaginative, Definitely on the Gory Side
Comment: Not that anyone would seriously consider handing this book to a kid, but just in case you were, um, don't. This book is definitely intense. The descriptions of the bodies are detailed and rather graphic... all too realistic.

That said, the pacing seems to be a bit off at times, but there are definite intense spikes where things pick up very quickly. I think this too seems to follow a "realistic" pattern. Movies may have us thinking killers are caught in a heartbeat but it can take months, even years. I'm no cop, but anyone can see it's boredom, boredom, boredom, TERROR (sometimes) for many.

The writing's not the best I've ever read, but I expect that has to do with this being a first novel. Room for improvement is not a bad thing.

I mainly picked the book up b/c I like the tv show Bones. The only thing the two Tempe Brennan characters share is a name, which I found quite amusing. Still, a worthwhile read if you're into the crime/ drama type book.

Summary: Better than Scarpetta
Comment: If you like Patricia Cromwell books, you will love Katherine Reich. She is much better..
