Jenny Blake has a theory about life: big decisions often don't amount to much, but little decisions sometimes transform everything. Her theory proves true the summer of 1955, when 14-year-old Jenny makes the decision to pick up a penny imbedded in asphalt, and consequently ends up stopping a robbery, getting a job, and meeting a friend who changes her life forever.
Jenny and Miss Shaw form a friendship that dares both of them to confront secrets in their pasts--secrets that threaten to destroy them. Jenny helps Miss Shaw open up to the community around her, while Miss Shaw teaches Jenny to meet even life's most painful challenges with confidence and faith. This unexpected relationship transforms both characters in ways neither could have anticipated, and the ripple effect that begins in the summer of the penny goes on to bring new life to the people around them, showing how God works in the smallest details. Even in something as small as a penny.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS:

Customer Rating: 55555
Summary: A Good Read
Comment: I gave this to my mother as a gift. She enjoys reading and admires Joyce Meyer. This was a good read for her.

Customer Rating: 11111
Summary: this book stinks - don't waste a penny on it
Comment: I was apprehensive when I bought the book but had read a review written by someone I thought would be honest -- and perhaps they were, but it was uncharacteristic of other reviews. This book was long, dull, poorly written with too many one-liners and colloquialisms. The only thing I liked about it was remembering the products of the 50's/60's. That's it.
I wouldn't have even given it one star but the system would not allow me to get beyond without at least one.

Summary: It's the small things that matter most...
Comment: Most people wouldn't look twice at a penny. But to 14-year-old Jenny Blake, they symbolize absolutely everything.

During the summer of 1955, it's the chance glistening of one penny that ultimately leads to Jenny's prime summer job with Miss Shaw, the mysterious jewelry shop owner who has the entire neighborhood gossiping regularly. Jenny is convinced she'll win Miss Shaw's trust and glean bits of information about the elegant woman to bring back to her family and friends, becoming a neighborhood hero.

It's important to Jenny that *someone* think she's special. For as long as she can remember, her father has abused her -- sexually, physically and emotionally -- her mother has been silent, and her older sister Jean has essentially practiced survival of the fittest.

Meanwhile, new issues arise in Jenny's life. Her school has just become integrated, and she's begun a secret friendship with Aurelia, a black girl who lives with the sort of family Jenny's always wished she could have. But while Jenny adores Aurelia, she knows their friendship is limited. For one thing, not everyone thinks a white girl and a black girl should be socializing together; for another, Jenny's father is determined to keep his daughters from having *any* friends. Then, on top of everything else, how on earth could Jenny possibly hope to explain to a girl like Aurelia -- surrounded by loving family and friends -- the secret misery behind closed doors at the Blakes? Would she shun Jenny as "dirty" if she knew?

Like most teenagers, Jenny doesn't have the answers. She stumbles through life, just hoping and praying she's making the right choices. One thing, however, she's allowed herself -- she's decided that she will interpret found pennies as "signs" from God. If she looks closely enough, the Lord will guide and help her when she needs Him most.

The terrible family doesn't resolve itself simply because the book ends. Considering the tangled web of years and issues involved, that would just be too unrealistic. However, Meyer and Bedford allow the readers to have a firm dose of hope, a glimpse into a future where things might, in fact, be considerably better than they were -- and that's no small feat.

Customer Rating: 55555
Summary: Reflection of times past & successful futures to come
Comment: This is a good read for those who have thought that they had to be a certain way to gain acceptance in a dysfunctional society of dysfunctional people's thoughts. I enjoyed it and recommend it to those who have thought but were not willing to say what they think or thought.
