The mission was to kill the most wanted man in the world--an operation of such magnitude that it couldn’t be handled by just any military or intelligence force. The best America had to offer was needed. As such, the task was handed to roughly forty members of America’s supersecret counterterrorist unit formerly known as 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta; more popularly, the elite and mysterious unit Delta Force.
The American generals were flexible. A swatch of hair, a drop of blood, or simply a severed finger wrapped in plastic would be sufficient. Delta's orders were to go into harm's way and prove to the world bin Laden had been terminated.
These Delta warriors had help: a dozen of the British Queen’s elite commandos, another dozen or so Army Green Berets, and six intelligence operatives from the CIA who laid the groundwork by providing cash, guns, bullets, intelligence, and interrogation skills to this clandestine military force. Together, this team waged modern siege of epic proportions against bin Laden and his seemingly impenetrable cave sanctuary burrowed deep inside the Spin Ghar Mountain range in eastern Afghanistan.
Over the years, since the battle ended, scores of news stories have surfaced offering tidbits of information about what actually happened in Tora Bora. Most of it is conjecture and speculation.
This is the real story of the operation, the first eyewitness account of the Battle of Tora Bora, and the first book to detail just how close Delta Force came to capturing bin Laden, how close U.S. bombers and fighter aircraft came to killing him, and exactly why he slipped through our fingers. Lastly, this is an extremely rare inside look at the shadowy world of Delta Force and a detailed account of these warriors in battle.

Summary: SQI TANGO SUPERMEN
Comment: Spent six plus months to get SQI TANGO and ASI WHISKEY8 then congradulations, your a SUPERMAN! You can jump out of an airplane at 25,000 feet, double tap bad guys while on the move in total darkness with a M1911 and rescue the princess! Great, but maybe what makes these guys the special is where they came from on ODA "Ruck Teams" or Ranger line companies. There mettle was hardened before they became the best of the best. The shooter pair is the basic building block and this advanced take on the buddy team is what is the glue that holds the whole organization together... As to the book, well it really is interesting, but does not tell a whole lot about what really happened. The quality of writing is fair but not professional. Bull Simmons would have torn him a new one if he turned in an after action report like this book. Save your money and get the late great Robin Moore's (Eternal Friend of SF) last book, or Linda Robinsons (Professional Journalist and Wife of a retired SF Operator!) Tell Me How It Ends... Now if these guys would just retire and keep their mouths shut, maybe we could win this war dispite Bush's loss of focus on GWOT and Obama's Jimmy the Geek Part II act? (For a really professional historical account of a STIKE Op/Direct Action Mission get "The Raid" by Benjamin F. Schemmer.)

Summary: A true life account of a top Delta unit
Comment: With all of my exposure to major motion pictures and television movies, television series, and the never ending series of print/television news about war and its participants I found it even more difficult to decide which book(s) had the most credible authors and contents. I assume that given all of that exposure most people have at least heard of the Delta force (or Delta something or other) and know that these "units" are made up of the top elite of the armed services members. I was reading a discussion board comprised of some ex-Delta and other armed services units where were heavily critizing "Dalton Fury" the author of Kill Bin Laden because his story and revelations are seen as some sort of betrayal to the other members and the country. I can't recall Fury's real name now but these guys knew it and were directing their criticisms directly at him claiming that they and the author had signed papers that they would not publish anything without permission from the government. The author did submit his book to the government but the government implicitly approved all of the contents due to a slip up so many were critical of the contents. Not one, however, claimed that the book was untrue or unfaithful to the truth, quite the opposite.
So that's why I chose this book and you should too. The author is one of the leaders who was there in the Pakistan Afghanistan border, near Tora Bora. He tells the truth behind what happened there after 9-11 and why the US was allegedly unable to capture or kill bin Laden. It shall never cease to amaze me just what these Delta units (and others like Navy Seals) are actual capable of doing and sustaining for days on end. All of the strenuous training, the research, the intelligence and endurance, not to mention the extremely high degree of personal danger under the worst sets of circumstances associated with mission after mission. Many of the missions are touched upon in the book which is a relatively easy book to read and enjoy. It also contains many footnotes which lead you to some really interesting government sites. These government sites not only support and add to the author's claims but contain a good deal of fascinating reading in and of themselves. You could spend hours reading the contents of these sites (write ups, statements, interviews, etc. about both familiar and unfamiliar events that have occurred in the past years.)

Summary: Interesting first person look at Tora Bora
Comment: The book is written all first person by the author. The chapter breakdown is a bit odd to follow, with a post Tora Bora mission, then a review of Delta selection and training, a Kosovo story which really has very little to do with the books main subject, and then the battle at Tora Bora. The author is very gracious and commends his men and SBS colleagues at all times and feels responsible for some of the missteps made during the battle, as any good officer should. His attempt to set the record straight on the battle is engaging though focuses less on specific encounters or exciting fire fights and more on the physical prowess of his team, their accomplishments, and the politics/stupidity of trying to operate within a tribal system where loyalties and goals are gray at the best of times. You will not get a great understanding of tactics, a lesson on how to guide a LGB on target, or a tight tension filled gut while reading this, but it will help you appreciate the intricacies our forces had to deal with and a possible understanding of how Bin Laden got away from that fight. Overall, a very good read.

Summary: Fascinating tale of the courage and professionalism of our Armed Forces
Comment: In spite of all the bureaucratic BS from our own inept politicians to the corrupt Afghan warlords, Kill bin laden(lower case intended) is an amazing first hand story of the United States Special Forces, specifically Delta, and their capabilities. It's been said before "MR President, if you let these men do what they're trained for, this war would have been long over". Take off the shackles and let 'em loose!!! Armed forces having a hard time getting enough new recruits?? Use this story by Dalton Fury as a recruiting tool.

Summary: High expecations, but a massive dud of a book
Comment: 1. I was looking forward to read this book, but ended up being 87% of the time frustrated with how awful and disjointed the book was written. I'm going to assume that there is an important story to tell in regards to the Tora Bora campaign, but the author really should have hired a professional writer in order to clearly and smoothly tell the story.

2. If your a military historian, then you'll want to or need to read this book no matter what. It's big on details and seemingly tangential tid bits. However, if a well written book, that has a flowing narrative, then skip this book; it's just poorly written.

3. The only reason I didn't give it a one star is because by persevering until the bitter end, I was able to glean / learn something from the book after all.
