Comment: The book is slow to get started and once you get into it, more than half way through, the ending is dull and unsuspenceful.

Summary: Disappointing
Comment: Under-whelmed. Reading this novel was a frustrating experience mainly because IT NEVER COMES TO A RESOLUTION! The author has two parallel plots going and only resloves the minor one. At the end of the book, the reader still doesn't know the solution to the mystery...and has a sneaking suspicion that the author doesn't really KNOW what happens. I would NEVER recommend this book to anyone.

Summary: A letdown
Comment: The characters in the story were interesting, but the story itself was a letdown. I struggled throughout this book, and continued reading it only because I needed to know the resolution. As it turns out, the one resolution that was most important, the one I was waiting for, never came. The murder mystery wasn't clever at all. The side stories went nowhere. A very disappointing read.

Summary: Wrapped up with a pretty little bow ... or not.
Comment: I understand that readers could feel somewhat cheated by this novel - complaints of the seemingly base and garden variety motivations for the crimes, the arrogance and inefficiency of some of the stories detectives, and the sense that the end of the novel was "cheating" the reader of a satisfying resolution to the book. But, really, aren't the vast majority of murders acts of extreme banality? Aren't there dozens of docu-drama cable shows like "America's Most Wanted" about unsolved "cold case" murders? Perhaps this book is just a little more realistic in it's treatment of crime than many readers are comfortable with.

Overall it was some pretty decent writing - spotty yes - trite and draggy in places, spare and elegant in others. I certainly never considered not finishing the book and in the end enjoyed the experience very much.

Summary: Takes a long time to not get very far...
Comment: I bought the book b/c the jacket teaser described a mystery in 1984 that was never solved. The main character was directly involved in said mystery and now had a current murder to unwravel that (hinted at by book teaser) was perhaps linked to the strange events in the past. 400+ pages later, the 1984 mystery still isn't solved, nor is it linked to the current murder. The present day murder is solved after a lot of slow exposition and build-up only to reveal the killer with a very melodramatic conclusion. I felt cheated after sticking with a story that moved like mollasess. Well written? Yes. Something worth caring about? Not so much.
