Summary: Fun but faulty! Even after buying a second system! :(
Comment: My girls ages 3 & 5 are very gentle children. Even though my children are very good with their toys, the leappad system, still wasn't durable enough. The cartridges from the very beginning would occassionally not work unless I wiggled it around. I thought maybe the first one we bought was faulty, so I bought a second one about 6 months later. It worked the exact same way. Misreading the cartridges or shutting off mid-way through play.

It's so disheartening to hear your 3 or 5 yr old become frustrated time and again because her favorite toy is tempermental and constantly stops working mid-play.

We used our leappads for naptime and quiet time in the car. It was great for getting my daughters to play quietly until they fell asleep. After months of the system no longer working, my girls gave up. Now we are looking for a better quality learning laptop or system for them.

It's ridiculous with today's technology, that this simple learning system failed in durability after only a few months when toys from my childhood like Texas Instruments Speak & Spell still works to this day!

Summary: Get a Tag instead
Comment: My mother-in-law got this for my daughter when she was either 2 or 3 years old. Sadly, this was one of the only Leapfrog toy that was not a hit. She played with it only a little bit. It did not hold her attention at all. In order to use it, we have to insert the cartridge that goes with the book into the machine. That necessitates keeping track of the cartridges and books and then lugging everything and the machine with us. Tag is much better. Everything is loaded onto the pen and all we need is the book. Besides, the stories on Tag are much more interesting and there are more activities.

Summary: Learn in Leaps and Bounds
Comment: I purchased this one year ago for my daughter who was 2 and a half at the time. The product came with a starter gamebook about Leap the Frog. I sat down with my child and we worked on the games together. She was able to hold the "pen" in her chubby toddler hands quite well and was also able to understand very quickly that touching the booklet with the pen created some exciting sounds and other cool characters would "talk". I first thought it might be a bit advanced for her, but she quickly picked up the premise of this leap pad.She was able to play the games on her own with only very little parental help.
Children must have an insane ability to grasp technology. I guess,only to them, it is not technology. It's just "fun"!
I have purchased 4 other leap pad gamebooks through the year. (Yes, Disney Princesses have infiltrated leapfrog). Each new game has been a success. I have enjoyed watching my daughter learn by leaps and bounds on this great beginner electronic toy. By the way, from day one she referred to it as her "laptop". You just can't believe how quickly young kids catch on to this stuff.

Summary: Unacceptable poor quality
Comment: It only worked for a week before it broke. The same malfunction that we had with the 'Baby' Leap-pad. When you insert a correct 'My first LeapPad' cartridge, the unit beeps and says "this is not a Leapfrog cartridge".
The Leapfrog products are JUNK.... don't buy it. I made the mistake twice to buy Leapfrog products. Their products appeal more to the parents than to the kids and the quality is unacceptable.

Summary: cheap leappad
Comment: This was a great toy to get him(2 year old) excited about reading. However the quality is terrible. Bought it for christmas last year and only worked right for 9 monthes. After trying to fix the leap pad myself I gave up and figured that I would just by a new one(the next model). But at this point, since we won't be able to use the cartridges that we already have, I think I'll try a vtech instead. He's gonna miss it though.
