Comment: Excellent value if you wait for the sale price (a mere fraction of the original 2006 price). You can program this robot to do various tasks including "guard duty", "roaming" and recognizing primary colors and taking a picture right out of the box. But the real fun starts when you learn how to hack into its embedded Linux and discover how to create your own programs in Java, C, and shell script.
Takes VGA pictures and records audio (mp3) and video (mpeg4). Has audio, ifrared, and touch sensors plus USB port and SD card slot for more personalities and extended programming. Adding new personalities - available for download at several robosapien enthusiast websites - made him a lot more interesting esp the cylon version. If you track down the RS Media SDK maybe you can learn to develop your own Jave code.
It is worth noting that you can use the included AC adapter while exchanging data with the robot over USB. But when he's walking around he eats batteries - 6 "D" cells and 4 "AA" plus another 3 "AA" for the remote control. You can buy cases of batteries wholesale if you look around.
IMO this is not for little children or for the rank beginner (unless you just want a big overpriced remote control toy). I sincerely doubt this robot would survive rough play by your average 8 year old. Regardless of the manufacturer 's 8+ age suggestion I feel this item is aimed squarely at the Linux hacker or hobby robot enthusiast market age 12 and up.
