Comment: The track is fine but the engine is kind of weak. It struggles to go up hills. I guess you can't ask for much from something of this size and that uses a single AA battery. I'm just not too impressed.

Summary: Wonderful starter train for your toddler!
Comment: My son received this train when he was 16 months old, he is now 23 months old. I cannot believe how much he STILL adores this simple, yet adorable train set. Almost every other day he reaches into the closet to grab the box out so he can play with it. He loves to set it up & take it apart as well. This would make a great gift to any child who is old enough for their 1st train set. I've since purchased additional "add ons" from the Brio line. My son loves the steam locomotive with lights & sounds. He also loves the tunnel the train goes through. We definitely prefer this BRIO battery operated 1st train set over the plain one. Beautifully made & will last forever, my 2nd son who is only 6 months old will surely enjoy this as well someday. A great purchase that continues to keep my son entertained!

Comment: Our children range from 16 down to 4. We started collecting Brio about 13 years ago. This toy has been played with by the girls and the boys, all the neighbors, and is still sitting in a prominent spot in our house, ready for the next adventure. Our four-year-old has developed great thinking skills by just trying to copy what her older brother builds. We bought this set to get my one-year-old nephew started. I recommend the battery-powered train for little ones who can't yet make it around the track on hands and knees while pushing a train.

Comment: Our little guy, not quite 2, is completely engaged by this toy. Sturdy wood construction, cars link by magnets, easy for his tiny hands to grasp, and works well both with and without the battery (which requires a very small screwdriver - I advise having one on hand, along with spare batteries).
This toy encourages the development of several skills, including cooperative play, large and small motor skills, directionality, colors, problem solving...and it's just plain fun for grown ups and little ones.
Extra track is available, as well as other trains (we love the safari one with the little animals), engines, switches and more.
This is a wonderful toy series of the best quality.
Although this is an Amazon shopping site, and I do most of my online shopping here, I can't help but note that Blountys wooden toys (online at blountys.com) has this set for almost half the price.

Summary: Good but...
Comment: My two-year old son loves pushing the train himself but is scared by the noise the battery-powered engine makes. With the battery in the engine it is too easy for him to accidentally turn it on when touching the engine. It also seems that the engine does not work as well without the battery: the cars, which are not battery-powered, run more smoothly than the engine. Apparently the engine is missing some sort of clutch to disengage the wheels when the engine is not being operated by battery.
